trade Cano and Joba and sign David Eckstein to play second base if Arod comes back

I simply do no see the Twins biting on a deal that doesn't include one of the "big 3". So, when you look at it like "Hughes/Joba/Kennedy & Cano" for Santana, it seems like a deal in which we give up too much.

Without factoring ARod into the situation which makes this a no brainer. Joba is not an option as far as I am concerned but Hughes and Kennedy have a long way to go to ever be Johan Santana. I love Cano but he can be replaced. While you cannot have too much pitching, Santana gives this team a chance to win the World Series over the next 5 years, I don't think you can say that with Hughes and Kennedy instead.

Who replaces Cano? I'm curious.

Eckstein wouldn't be a bad option, he's a gritty role player the Yankees could always use. Ditto for Iguchi.

I still don't like the idea of trading Cano at the moment even for Santana, but maybe that will change.

Cano AND Joba?

I'd much rather keep Cano considering Arod is back. I know that would be a reason to trade him now since Arods back, but i just feel he's too valuable a player to trade. No way I'm trading Joba, period, doesn't matter who it's for.

If I'm GM, i sure as hell aren't trading Hughes and Joba, Cano too. Without those 3 i don't think we have enough for them to bite.

In FA, Luis Castillo or Eckstein. There are also guys like Mark Loretta as well as a one season option. With ARod, Posada, and Abreu back were are talking about our 7 perhaps 8th hitter in the lineup. I just don't value second base that highly.

The more you hear about who isn't available from teams the more it looks like Melky and Hughes with a couple of the 2nd tier guys might do it if the Twins commit to moving him.

One thing that is being glossed over with Santana by the national media is the fact that he has a no trade clause. So sure the Twins can decide not to deal him now but he can also then tell them he isn't going anywhere in the middle of the season when he is about to go on the FA market. Beyond that he will likely want his money now before waiving his no trade.

So the market for Santana may well be limited to teams that have the young talent as well as being ready and willing to pony up the 7 years and 130-150 mil for his services.

With the 5 year, $93MM offer the Twins have put on the table, will that be enough for Santana or will he reject it and hold out for next year?

No way he takes a 5 year deal. I'm sure he doesn't mind the $18.6 mil per season he was offered, but you can bet anything he is going for a 7 or 8 year deal.

I think the no trade clause has been glossed over because there is pretty much no chance Santana will reject a trade to one of the few teams that have the money to make a serious offer. Santana would be aiming to sign with either the Red Sox or the Yankees and those are the teams that are probably the front runners in any trade talks.

That is bad news for us. Unless the guy just doesn't want to be a Twin he is going to re-sign. He is under contract for this season already and that makes him the highest paid pitcher in the game, he may want another year or two but the Twins really stepped up with that offer.
