Pavano still a Yankee sorta

Post#1 » by #1knickfan » Sun Dec 9, 2007 4:24 pm

New York Post - Carl Pavano spoke to Brian Cashman on Friday at the Stadium and said he is going to accept a minor-league assignment after the Yankees release him from the final year of a disastrous four-year, $39.95 million contract.

Under the release plan, Pavano would get the $11 million he is owed for the 2008 season and the $1.95 million buyout he would have coming to him because the Yankees aren't going to pick up a $15 million option for 2009.

Pavano is leaning toward accepting the Yankees' minor-league offer so he can have a place to rehab his elbow. By keeping him in the system, the Yankees protect themselves from Pavano healing ahead of schedule and pitching effectively for another team. [READ]

Good move for the Yanks. They save some money and protect themselves in case Pavano somehow returns to being a useful pitcher.

im glad they didnt outright cut him. if Pavano can stay healthy i think he can still be an effective pitcher. Before getting hurt or feeling discomfort in his elbow last year he did pitch well. Pavano has been a huge bust for us, but i hope he can regain some kind of form and pitch again for us. even if its as reliever

Not for us. But some National League team desperate for starting pitching at the trade deadline might be willing to take a flyer on him if Pavano is healthy. We couldn't ask for much but at least we can get something for him. Who knows, maybe our scouts can find a diamond in the rough. We seem to be doing better evaluating young talent than making smart decisions in free agency.
