Interesting theory about Phil's struggles

Both pitcher and manager attributed the hiccups to location problems confounded by one small quirk. Hughes admitted after the game to night vision troubles -- something that's affected him throughout his time with the Yankees. On this evening, Hughes missed several signs from catcher Chris Stewart, one of them directly leading to Tigers runs.

It's something that's always only bothered Hughes at night, and that he and the Yankees have only discussed in passing. Despite making two unscheduled trips to his eye doctor over the past two years, Hughes hasn't yet seriously considered the prospect of wearing goggles or contact lenses that might improve his vision. Perhaps until now.

Then again, Hughes says he's always had that problem, so he's not about to use it as an excuse. He remembers the old dominant Phil -- the guy who breezed through two full Minor League seasons with nary a scratch on his resume -- who rarely had to worry.

Now it's stupid to think that this is the sole cause of his early struggles, and for it to be a major factor at all you'd have to figure it's gotten worse recently since it never stopped him from dominating in the minors. But you have to wonder if this is playing into some of his control problems and the bad pitch selection he's made at times.

It doesn't actually sound that crazy. Get the kid a pair of contacts, ASAP.

Wait why can't he be called Phil Hughes? Phil isn't some nickname based on performance, it is just his nickname. That's dumb. He had a great spring training and he had a fantastic September and he was absolutely dominant in the playoffs. His velocity is not down at all. He always threw 92-94 with movement, he occasionally hits 95 or 96. Don't trust the YES Network gun, it's almost never right. I remember a few times it was clocking Joba's fastball at 92, does that sound right to you? Follow gameday online to find out the most accurate speed.

As I was thinking last night, I don't think Hughes has one big problem like his mechanics are suddenly messed up or his velocity is down or something. He has a bunch of small issues that are just cumulating together. Starting 6 games with 4 different catchers doesn't help. Horrible weather in pretty much every start. Even last night it was cold and windy. Granted he has to learn to pitch through these things but when you are young and are coming off a few bad starts, these things will not help you get your groove back. Damon in CF and Matsui in LF didn't help him either, as at least one run is saved if it is Melky instead of Damon. Now it looks like he is having vision issues. They better have an optometrist in the club house tomorrow for Phil to get himself some contacts. -Jitpal
