15th in baseball in runs scored

Post#1 » by cmaff051 » Wed Jul 30, 2008 2:40 am

Just take a look at how bad we have been scoring runs compared to over the past few years.

We are 15th in runs scored this year. We are only 12 runs ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Orioles and the Cardinals have scored more runs than we have. The Indians have only scored 14 less runs than we have. The Angels have only scored 20 less runs than we have. These are all offenses with not even close to the talent that we have.

We are on pace to score 750 runs. We scored 968 in 2007. We scored 930 runs in 2006. We have scored anywhere from 800-980 runs over the last decade. The last year that we scored less than 800 runs was in 1995. We scored 749 that year.

While we have had our offensive struggles this year, until I looked at the stats, I never realized our offense was this bad.

We have a big whole to dig ourselves out of. In order to reach around 900 runs, which has been around our average over the past 5 years, we'd have to score over 8 runs a game over our remaining 55 games.

Does anybody really think we'll do that?

The problem is we have no situational hitting. Even in the 9th today, Arod, Giambi, and Betemit were all looking to hit the home run instead of getting a regular base hit. The other issue is Jeter is hitting into a lot of double plays and it's very difficult to score runs when guys are not on base in front of Abreu and Arod. The last issue is Giambi, Cano, Abreu and Melky are very streaky hitters. They seem to be sprinkled in between, thus, killing all the rallies. Giambi hitting .150 in the 5th spot just kills the Yankees. -Jitpal

Wow. I can understand the offense not reaching an elite level when you consider that ARod, Damon, Posada, and Matsui have spent significant time on the DL...with Posada and Matsui missing nearly the entire season. Melky has really hurt the lineup more than people realize, because an underachieving Melky makes the bottom third of the lineup look like an NL lineup. What always made our lineups so strong was a capable #9 hitter to turn the lineup over. But regardless, it shouldn't be that mediocore.

I really don't understand why people so badly want Bonds. He will take 3-4 weeks to get ready. So say he comes by September and you hit him fifth behind Arod, what then? It isn't like Arod isn't getting pitches to hit, he is, he is just striking out. What will happen is they will walk Bonds on, then we can have guys like Molina, Melky and Giambi try to bring him in. If they can't bring in Giambi, they aren't going to bring in Bonds. He isn't going to help them in the field, he isn't going to help them in the clubhouse, he isn't going to provide leadership, he isn't going to help on the bases and he won't get a chance to hit. Plus, the other thing then is that you then stash either Damon or Nady on the bench, the guys with the best batting averages. Bonds would DH, Damon in LF, and Giambi at 1B. So the left handed heavy lineup becomes even more lefty handed heavy. It's just a bad move. -Jitpal
