Re: YANKS SAWX Round 3
I'm still not worried and I would not put Joba back in the pen. I think we need to get Bruney and Marte healthy. If Bruney comes in there, he does not give up 3 runs. I would have liked to see Robertson get a shot there but Aceves has been lights out so you can't really complain. The people bashing Girardi for leaving Sabathia in there need to understand that Sabathia was the best pitcher available at the time other than Mo who they needed an inning later. It's ok, the Yankees will get back in stride against the Mets and the Red Sox will go back to .500 baseball against their next opponent and the Yanks will be back in first by the end of the next series. -Jitpal

The bullpen has been the Yankees major weakness so far.

This goes well beyond just Girardi, but last night's game was a perfect example of why the closer is such a conceptually stupid idea. Even getting past the fact that Girardi didn't even put Sabathia on a short leash in the 8th like he should have, why is Aceves the first in line to come out of the pen? Nick Green gets on, then the top of the Sox order comes up (with Pedroia and Drew subsequently getting on base off of C.C. next). Is there any doubt that this is the high leverage situation of the game? Shouldn't the most capable man be brought in to do the job in Mo? So why is he left for the 9th inning to pitch to lesser hitters that he never ends up facing?
The idea that you need a certain special someone to pitch the 9th is such a frigging farce.

I don't disagree with you but that's just the way the game is played these days. There's nothing that anyone can do about it until official scorers start recognizing that games can be lost in the 7th and 8th innings and start awarding saves based on difficulty. Right now managers have to let their best bullpen pitcher go for the save in the 9th. -Jitpal
