What to do about Chien Ming Wang?

Post#1 » by Dr. Detfink » Fri Jul 24, 2009 5:47 am

Man, can this guy be any more fragile? Right now, a bag of glass is more sturdy. With his return uncertain, the Yanks have unofficially said he's out for the season. Keep in mind, last season he couldn't round third base without putting himself out for the season.

What can be done with this guy? At this point, he went from being the #3 guy to #6 starter.

Can you count on him next season? Probably not.

This is a big deal as the Yanks have to use up off days to compensate for the rain outs in April. Every start by Burnett and Sabbathia is crucial. You can't count on Joba. You can't count on Andy Pettitte after his disasterous August/September last season.

Makes me wonder if Cash is still waiting in the wings for the Halladay sweepstakes.

^^That's not fair. His first major injury was last year. Sure he hasn't been able to keep healthy this year but to say he's always been like this is just not true.

We need to remember what Wang has done for us. No way can we just give up on him. He's a winner and is capable of carrying a rotation. We need to work with him and get him where he use to be, we owe him that.

That's not true, he missed almost half a season in 2005 when Torre was still manager. There's a reason why the Yanks won't sign him to a long term deal and would rather go to arbitration.

So ok, let's see: 2005, 2008, 2009...

Are you going to offer him a 4 year deal around 50 million? Cause that's ultimately where this is going.

exactly why Cash made a big mistake by refusing to offer Wang and prospects [other then hughes/joba] for Santana, when the Twins asked about him....

He missed half of 2005 because he wasn't called up til mid season not because he was injured...

He was hurt in the minors. Again, there is a reason why the Yanks would not extend Wang.

There are reasons why the Yankees didn't extend Wang but it isn't because he is injury prone.
Instead it is because they were concerned with his loss of velocity coming back from last year's freak injury. You may argue that my distinction is too small to matter but surely you would agree that ridding yourself of Wang at the bottom of his value makes little sense.

It appears that Wang will need career threatening surgery. No harm is done by putting him on injured reserve and seeing if he can come back from it in two or three years. This unfortunate reality just provides more evidence that you can never have too much pitching.
We are discussing no small matter, but how we ought to live.

I wish Pavano won 19 games total as a Yankee, let alone have 2 19 win seasons with us.
