Washburn is the only true rumor out there. Cashman loves this guy for some reason.

This was not true according to Abraham and the Reds organization.

Arroyo's owed to much money for a guy that wouldn't even have a spot in the rotation next season. No thanks. I'd rather get Ian Snell.

Re: Yankees Reds discussing Arroyo deal
None of the names being mentioned sound all that promising, really. Arroyo's on the wrong side of 30 and has declined too much to be worth his contract. Snell's still fairly young but has crashed and burned the past few seasons. Washburn's ERA is mostly a product of luck and defense and Zduriencik is probably trying to sell high on him. I don't see where any of these guys is a better idea than handing the spot to Hughes or Aceves; they probably aren't even much better than sticking with Mitre.
Halladay isn't happening and the Indians seem set on keeping Lee unless someone gives up too much for him. An internal solution's probably the easiest move here.

Re: Yankees Reds discussing Arroyo deal
The Yankees are going to need another starter if they do in fact move Joba back to the pen due to his innings limit. Halladay and Lee are not going to happen, and shouldn't due to the cost in prospects it would take to get them.
The other names we have heard all have benefits. Washburn is a veteran, having a very good year, but supposedly would cost NY a top prospect. Arroyo is another vet, with a high ERA, but he knows how to win. The other guys from Pittsburgh (Snell, Duke) are possibilities. Neither is a sure thing, but you figure both would be better then Kei Igawa. The guy that I like the best is still Aaron Harang. He is making a ton of money, but has had some good years with a bad team.

Re: Yankees Reds discussing Arroyo deal
I'd take a flyer on Harang. But his contract isn't that bad (only guaranteed through 2010; mutual option for '11 if he's traded according to Cot's) and his numbers this year aren't far off his 06-07 form, so good prospect(s) would have to be involved unless the Reds can't dump Arroyo on anyone and get really desperate to save cash.

Re: Yankees Reds discussing Arroyo deal
Seems like Cashman is only looking to fill a #4 slot. Basically, he considers Joba #3 starter until his inning limits are met by which case I expect Pettitte to move up in the rotation.
Cashman is looking for Daryl Rasner 2.0 without giving up prospects. I don't think that's going to be Arroyo.

I'd like to think they will find a way to skip a few of Joba's starts pretty soon so that he can start in October assuming we make it there. I'm not ready to live on Pettitte's past life as a good postseason pitcher.

I would agree with that thinking, but when you look at the schedule I just don't see where you can find a place to skip him. Unless, you move Aceves in for a spot start here and there, which I wouldn't consider, the Yanks will need five starters. And considering Joba's innings limit is somewhere in the 150-170 range, he really only has 7-8 starts left for the season.

There is no way the Yanks are going to start Joba in the post season. He's going to the pen after the innings limit is reached.
In the short series, it's going to be CC, AJ, and Pettitte. In a longer series, Cashman will use a deal to put a starter in.

Re: Yankees Reds discussing Arroyo deal
Very possible if the Yanks still are interested in a deal. Reds will likely put Arroyo on waivers which he should have no problem clearing and then work on a deal IF there's interest.

The whole Joba innings limit fiasco is trash. If they're that concerned about how many innings he pitches than they shouldn't have put him in the rotation to begin with. How many times did he actually go more than 6 innings in a game? Now he's starting to go deep into games, giving solid outings and they want to bring up a innings limit? Its just like how Giradi takes him out whenever he gets hot in a game. I think these guys need to stop outsmarting themselves and rediscover common sense.

As much as they'd like to, they can't just throw away the innings limit. This isn't just about Joba, this is the development plan for every single Yankee minor league pitcher to not increase innings by more than 40 in order to make sure that you don't put too much stress on a pitcher's arm too soon. Remember when Joba was first called up to relieve? He couldn't pitch two innings, he couldn't pitch back to back days, etc. The Yankees can't now simply throw all of that away and ignore the organizational philosophy.

What's commonsensical about not protecting your young starters from injury? The innings limit didn't just pop up out of nowhere, it's something they've been planning for all along. It's a happy coincidence that Joba's pitching well of late.
