All I have to say is LOL. Highest paid OFer with less than 20 home runs. 9th largest contract is baseball, soon to be 10th after the Adrian Gonzalez deal. Maybe 11th depending on the Cliff Lee deal. -Jitpal

Damn I was opposed to going after Holliday last year but now it looks like the right decision. I imagine this only increases Lee's leverage and therefore the chance for him to demand a 145+ million dollar deal. Stupid Nationals.

with so many lefties in their lineup, getting lee is important, even if it means the 7th year

This. Time to get it done, and end the suspense. Give him Sabathia's deal. 7/160.

im surprised however that BOS made this deal...seems like they took the bait CAsh put out there....I mean Crawford is good, but is he really worth that much all things considered?

Overpaying for a guy who relies on his speed. This contract is ugly. whats up with owners overpaying everyone.

Re: o/t: crawford to red sox
Well, remember Boston forfeited last season so they can spend this season.
Pretty much every 2-3 seasons they are going to just sit and let their fans pay for seats (Cause sulking at Fenway is profitable) to get rid of dead contracts...
This is an interesting deal because it SEALS the fact that Boston does not want to deal with Beltre who had an incredible season last year (hmmm...contract year?)
However the Sawx still have a lot of work to do. If you think Drew scares anyone or their catching situation...and Beckett and Dice-K aren't as intimidating as they were 3 years ago.

guys like crawford scare me... very fast, but that works well on a small ball team like the rays.. this weakens the rays, but not sure how much stronger this makes the sox... this guy is not a power hitter and when speed guys decline, they go down fast as hades.. LOL

cliff lee can pitch until he is 39.. adding him now with cc and Hughes will make our staff dominant up top..

Yea, in a hitter's park Carl Crawford is going to love Fenway. Christ, Curtis Granderson loves hitting in that park.

Re: o/t: crawford to red sox
I mean this move was a guarantee given the ages of their core players and pitchers. With Becket and Lackey moving towards their mid-30's, Dice-K showing signs of regression (if he was ever any good to begin with), and Lester entering his prime and Bucholz maturing, this was a no brainer. I'm not quite sure I like Crawford in LF in fenway though, it negates so much of his range with such a shallow backdrop. Yea he can play like right behind the ss but honestly, how many flairs are there compared to line drives in the gaps?
Anyway, as I said earlier about the Werth deal, it was only going to help the Yankees as now their main rival is paying 20mil+ per year for a good defensive outfielder who's best attribute doesn't decline well with age. I will say this makes their offense really LH though, and even with this acquisition, other then 1-4, I don't fear anyone else (lowrie, ortiz, drew, salty lol).
Is Carl Crawford really the best of in the game today? I don't think so. This was a deal that had to be made and we can only sit here and thank Washington for driving up this price. With this contract, becketts extension, papelbon raises, gonzalez likely extension, the red-sox shouldn't have much room for more spending.
The Lee deal looks huge now to neutralize the LH in that lineup, as well as finding a lh specialist to mix and match.
Also, is theo going to do anything about that bullpen? Bard can't pitch every game and well Papelbon throws 1 pitch and its not anywhere near the next closer who only has 1 pitch as well

Agreed. If you look at it, over the course of the next 5-8 years Gonzalez/Crawford should be better than Martinez/Beltre but if you look at the year Martinez/Beltre had and the year Gonzalez/Crawford had, it really isn't all that different. I don't think their defense got better and these guys should put up similar offensive stats (caveat is Crawford can steal bases). Defense at 1B is about the same, 3B is worse, a monkey could play LF in Fenway and at catcher they have Varitek where they had V-Mart. For all the money they spent, I don't think they are any better than they were last season. They just need everyone to stay healthy. -Jitpal
