NYY in 2008-2009 Offseason

Let's say the Yanks won't make the playoffs (they probably wont). What would you like the Yanks to do? I'm a Mets fan, but I truely think this team needs to be re-built. They should try and get rid of guys like Giambi, Abreu (his stats look good, but he's a guy i'd never want to see on my team), Mussina (can barly pitch 90 now), Pavano (1 more year left i think? LOL).

the team is old and filled with doubles hitters. If the team is out of it by July (meaning 10 games out of the Wildcard. probably wont happen), why not trade A-rod for prospects? NYY needs more young guys outside of Tabita (who i think is only 18?), duncan (value went down. should see what he's like w/ giambi on the DL), Melky (overrated. should be a ok role player), Cano (very good). With those 4 guys, you keep Posada and Jeter. And you probably are stuck with One (if not all of the OF's) on the team.

The pitching staff isn't great either and is aging. The bullpen is worned down. And Torre takes guys out way to early. He and Cashman should/will be replaced after this year.

What would you like to see the NYY do?

Abreu is a FA, Giambi has one more year, and why in the hell would you want to trade AROD. youd get 50 cents on the dollar

Well A-Rod will probably opt out, so you can't trade him unless its in-season.

because if he opts out. he isn't under contract.

i'm saying trade a-rod if all hope is lost. because it's obvious he's going to opt out. and getting "50 cents for a doller" is better then "nothing for a doller"

Giambi has a full NTC and expires after the '08 season. He isn't going anywhere. Abreu has a team option that I highly doubt will be picked up at the end of this year and he has a full NTC. Mussina has one year left and many want to deal him but we just don't have a steady pitcher to step in for him with all the injuries. Pavano had TJ, and expires after the next season. No team will deal for him now.

I don't know where you get your information from but this team isn't old, it just has some older players. Granted the outfield is old, Moose is old and Giambi is old. Everybody else is well either young or performing at the same level as before or better at their ages. Posada for example has been getting better and better every year. Why deal Arod at all? He has publicly said that he wants to stay in NY. He is the best player in baseball and one of the best home run hitters in baseball. You said that we are old and doubles hitters, well Arod doesn't fit that description at all because Arod is at the top of his game and leading the AL in home runs. We have plenty of prospects other than Tabata, but the pitchers far outweigh the position players, which isn't a bad problem to have. Melky is overrated but he isn't. It is wierd. His value to this team is more than his value to other teams. As in, he can play all 4 outfield positions, he can switch hit, his power is growing, he can steal some bags, he draws plenty of walks, and he has an above average arm. To us, he can fill in for one our outfielders who really do need days off all the time. Plus, his intangibles are plenty. I've seen him countless times be the one guy who isn't a robot out there, the one guy who is having fun, and with that he has single handedly started rallies late in games to win. If you ever put him in a game deciding AB or one close to it, he will put together a solid AB and many times grind out a hit or walk. Even times when he is severely overmatched. We aren't stuck with anything, Damon has a partial NTC, so he can be dealt. Matsui brings in enough money to make it worth it to put him at DH and let him hit(which he is doing much better at of late).

The pitching staff is actually pretty above average. Wang, who was second in Cy Young voting last year, is a keeper. Hughes, the 20 year old phenom, is a keeper. Pettitte has a 2.51 ERA in the AL. He is fine, plus he has a gentleman's agreement that if he isn't able to pitch next season, he will not pick up his option. Roger, sure, he's old but he isn't going to be here next year. Moose? Won't be here the year after next. Plenty of guys have shown they are capable of pitching well enough to keep the ship afloat, if you will, to replace those guys when their deals expire. That's considering we don't trade for anyone or sign anyone in the offseason. The bullpen actually isn't as awful as everyone makes it out to be. Procter is overworked, but still solid. Bruney and Henn have been our most consistent guys out there. Mo is Mo. Farnsworth? Yeah, we've known it for a while. Torre needs to resign and Cashman needs to stay. Simple as that. We aren't as bad as our record seems, and our players aren't as bad as their stats and/or age say. Just interesting circumstances. -Jitpal

Honestly, all we need to do is get rid of Abreu, look into the first base position, sign Ichiro and work on the bullpen
