Montero - 3 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, BB

Check out the progress Montero has made. From opening day to June 10th, Montero was just 40 for 185 (good for a .216 average) with just 3 home runs, 1 triple, 10 doubles, 21/37 BB/K ratio.

From June 11th through today, he has gone 40 for 115 (.348 average) with 5 home runs, 2 triples, 11 doubles, 14/20 BB/K. Just think about what he had to adjust to. After 525 at bats in low-A, he had just 180 AB in high-A before being promoted to AA, where he was only given 167 AB before being moved to AAA (and the thumb injury cut his season short). So he was given just 347 at bats, not even one full season, to move through the system as a 19 year old. So as a 20 year old, it took him 2 months to adjust to AAA, I think we can all live with that. No worries, Jesus is still the absolute beast we all knew he was. Not to mention that he did this all while his swing was being tweaked by the coaching staff. BTW his line is .348/.415/.609 since June 11th.

Nunez - 0 for 4, K

Romine - 1 for 3, R, 2B, 2 RBI
Laird - 2 for 4

Pirela - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB
Joseph - 3 for 3, R, 2 RBI, BB
Stoneburner - 5.1 innings, 7 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

Flores - 1 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, BB

Sanchez has sat out the last few games with a wrist injury that doesn't seem to be too bad

Some other notables from the weekend...

Banuelos - 6 innings, 2 hits, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K...beast
Betances - 4 innings, 5 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K...two meh starts in a row, but thats after allowing 2 runs in his first 6 starts on the year so that's okay
Warren - 5 innings, 4 hits, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K...AA debut

Another night of dominance from Jesus...3 for 3, 2B, R, BB

Puts him at 45 for his last 121 (.372). In his last 10 games alone, he is hitting .485. The kid hasn't even struck out since July 11th...I don't even know what else to add at this point. His average on the season is all the way up to .278, and he was at .216 on June 10th!

Nunez - 1 for 4, R, SB (19th)

Laird - 0 for 3, BB, K
Brackman - 5.2 innings, 9 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Pirela - 2 for 4, R
Joseph - 0 for 2, 2 BB
Banuelos - 5 innings, 5 hits, 0 ER, 3 BB, 10 K

Heathcott - 2 for 5, 2B, K
Murphy - 0 for 4, R, K
Paredes - 1 for 4, SB (33rd...seriously)
Marshall - 6 innings, 5 hits, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Culver - 0 for 2, BB, K
Flores - 1 for 1, 2 BB

Great to see Montero finally hitting like we know he can. It was only a matter of time before the guy broke out. I'm actually really glad this Lee trade didn't go through. The Yankees have been lacking big time hitting prospects for years and you don't trade them away for a 31 year old pitcher who is certainly going to be on the market this winter (especially since he went to the Rangers, who can't afford to re-sign him).

You're ratings are pretty good.

How would you rate the 10 best pitching prospects in the minors.

I'd say rated more by ultimate upside than who is major league ready, ie Meloncen may be ahead of Nova MLB wise, but Nova the better prospect etc.

I think the Yanks have a number of decent pitching prospects, esp if Brackman pans out with the other kid who came back from a hurt arm.

Hmm thats pretty tough, there are a number of good pitchers who are breaking out this season but its tough to separate them from the rest because they are mostly in Tampa/Trenton and haven't reached the higher levels yet. I'd say this though...

Tier 1
1. Banuelos - Just 19 and already dominating high-A ball, throws 92-94, good curve, outstanding change...has everything you'd want in a pitcher, and even better he is a lefty
2. Betances - Has some injury concerns but so far nothing too major, has reportedly been hitting as high as 98 this year so its nice to see the velocity back
3. Brackman - Has recovered nicely from his injuries and control problems, has really had a nice year and is still settling into AA...only problem is his age is getting up there so he's got to keep it up to get to the majors soon. Still so much upside, even if he has to be a reliever in the long run, awesome stuff

Tier 2
4. Ramirez - I might put him slightly lower on this list on a general prospect list, but if you are going to take into account mainly upside then he deserves to be right here. Throws hard and is expected to gain velocity as he fills out, nice delivery and a lot to work with
5. Stoneburner - Its impossible to discount what he has accomplished this season, awesome numbers and just a very good pitcher with a refined repertoire
6. Noesi - Awesome breakout year, incredible control but his stuff doesn't match his control...but if it did he would be top 3 on this list so thats not a really bad thing. Could be a middle of the rotation pitcher
7. Nova - Having a really good year after kind of being forgotten last year, has reportedly been throwing in the 93-95 range which makes him more intriguing as a prospect. Still probably a back of a rotation guy in the end but he can't be disregarded
8. Phelps - Practically gets better at each level, an all around solid pitcher but a fringe starter down the road IMO
9. Warren - Another breakout guy this year, is kind of in the same group as Stoneburner/Noesi in that sense. Good pitcher but his stuff isn't as good as Stoneburner even though the stats are just as impressive. Should be a major leaguer
10. McAllister - A personal favorite of mind, it hurts to have to rank him low after having him as a top 5 prospect in the system the past few years. Its a combination of him dropping off and other guys breaking out, but he can reach the majors...I just don't think it will be in pinstripes

Its pretty incredible that all 10 of these guys "should" reach the major leagues in the next couple of years in some regard. Very few farm systems can say that, if any. It really makes you feel better about possible trade rumors, we just don't have space for all of these guys...sometimes you have to package a few of them.

Stoneburner continued his dominance yesterday - 5 innings, 2 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K...this is the first time in his last 9 starts that he has walked more than 1 batter. In those 9 starts, he has given up a total of 9 earned runs

Montero was hit by a pitch and removed from the game but is day to day with a sore fore arm (better than it being the wrist)

Betances, after his surgery, seems to be living up to his early hype.

Its frustrating because whenever he has been healthy, he has put up completely mind boggling numbers. Hopefully he is past the injury concerns because he is definitely stronger and more mature so maybe his body just had to fill out to handle the stress of pitching. So far so good. There isn't any room in AA because the pitching there is absurd also, so far the Tampa rotation has bumped Brackman, Warren, and Noesi to Trenton this year...and I think Stoneburner would get the nod before Betances as well.

Right now Betances just need innings, and so far he is providing that and top end production.

It seems like every year we have one MiL team with a roster that's just uninteresting...this year, it's SI. DeLeon hasn't really made the impact people hoped for, Sosa is supposedly the kind of player that looks way better in person than in a box score, and their staff is mostly filler and low-round picks from this draft.

I guess it's a by-product of going big on toolsy HSers early in this draft since NYPL rosters are usually heavy with recently drafted college players but they're just not a very interesting team this season.

Yeah, and this GCL team has been one of the worst in recent memories. A lot of these kids dominated the DSL and were expected to perform really well in the GCL, but the only one who has carried over is Flores. Culver has been ok especially considering his age, and Sanchez has been a beast. But aside from that it has been nothing but underachievers.

Return to New York Yankees
