A lot of these kids dominated the DSL and were expected to perform really well in the GCL, but the only one who has carried over is Flores. Culver has been ok especially considering his age, and Sanchez has been a beast. But aside from that it has been nothing but underachievers.

The GCL team at least has some interesting bats in Sanchez, Flores, Culver and, to a lesser extent, Henry Pena. Some pitchers worth following as well, but outside of Gerritse the results have sucked.

Quick (but awesome) update tonight...

Laird promoted to AAA, then he went out and went 4 for 4 with 2 home runs in his debut
Joseph promoted to AA

Betances - 6 innings, 1 hit, 0 R, 1 BB, 11 K... :o :o :o
On the season: 57 innings, 31 hits, 15 BB, 68 K, 1.26 ERA, 0.80 WHIP :o :o :o

Banuelos - 1 inning, 1 hit, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K...after the 1st inning there was a rain delay and it was too long for him to come back out for the 2nd inning

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.ph ... justments/

- Corban Joseph was recently promoted to Double-A, and you can bet he’s happy to be away from Tampa. Joseph’s final FSL numbers (.302/.378/.436) look good without any context, but only improve on closer inspection. In just two more games on the road, Joseph hit seven more doubles, three more triples, and two home runs more than his home production. His ISO was .076 higher on the road, so I think it’s safe to say there’s more juice in the bat than his overall numbers might suggest.

- On the opposite side, I’m still not sold on the “breakout” of Andrew Brackman. The reports on stuff are very good, and his command has certainly improved. So I don’t deny there has been improvement. But Brackman allowed no home runs and a 2.36 ERA in 27 innings in Tampa, and outside of there, in 33 innings, gave up five home runs and a 7.29 ERA. On the encouraging side, it doesn’t appear that the breakouts of Dellin Betances or Adam Warren seem Tampa-induced. The jury is still out on Graham Stoneburner.

I would think they will want to get him ABs, the only problem will be getting him on the 40-man roster. Considering he is going to be on the 40-man next year anyway, they may as well find a way to get him on right now. Someone like Huffman, Golson, or Corona can be DFA I would guess.

Another monster game from Montero - 3 for 4, R, HR, RBI...his home run was pulled to left field, his previous 8 homers had all been to dead center or opposite field

In his last 5 games he is hitting .571 (12 for 21) with 3 homers, 2 doubles and 6 RBI.

His season average is up to .287 and his slugging is now at .494, with an OPS over .850. And this guy was hitting .216 (40 for 185) on June 11th!

Since that date he is hitting .362 (64 for 177) with 11 homers, 17 doubles, and a fat .650 SLG. For all his struggles, he may finished with a .300 average, .500 slg, and 50+ extra base hits. And hes still 20.

I don't know how he doesn't get called up in September, the Yanks can't justify that his bat wouldn't help the team.

Aceves was filling that "Ramiro Mendoza" role last year, hope he comes back full strength.

Maybe I'm just being a reactionary because of the team's recent offensive struggles, but when Scranton's season is over, I'd put The Jesus on the the 40-man, bring him up, and see if they can catch some lightning in a bottle. I doubt it's going to happen since they've been talking about sending him to the AFL (and I also doubt they'd want to take a chance on his defense during a tight divisional race) but I think it's worth taking a shot.

Montero - 2 for 4, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB, K
Nunez - 2 for 5, 2 R, K
Nova - 6.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 K

Romine - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI
Joseph - 0 for 4, K
Warren - 7 innings, 2 hits, 0 ER, 1 BB, 15 K. Set the Trenton record for Ks, struck out the side 4 times....here is an article about it:
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news ... &fext=.jsp

Banuelos - 6 innings, 7 hits, 4 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Heathcott - 0 for 4, 2 K
Murphy - 0 for 4, K

Segedin - 2 for 5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, K
Flores - 1 for 5, R, HR, 3 RBI
Sanchez - 0 for 4
After the game, Sanchez was promoted to Staten Island

EDIT:
Culver and Segedin were also promoted to SI...probably just moves to make room for the newly signed draftees

Montero's home run from the other night. Opposite field (where I think about 10 of his 15 homers have gone this season). Look how freakin high that wall is, and he still crushed it oppo over there.

That was a great article; really fascinating stuff. I think most fans realize that the life of an MiLer isn't a glamorous one, but it's interesting to get some details on just how bohemian an existence it can be. Still, it kicks ass to get paid to play sports, even if it's a pittance. I used to work for a guy who played for a 3rd division soccer team in Germany and he said that even though the pay was marginal at best, he would have happily kept playing well into his 30s if not for multiple knee injuries.

In other news, Frankie Piliere (whose work I've really grown to like over the past season or two) just posted updated scouting reports on Manny Banuelos (http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/08/19/full-scouting-report-manny-banuelos/) and Dellin Betances (http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/08/20/full-scouting-report-dellin-betances/). Excellent stuff from a very good source.
