fastball at 95 and curve is nasty, you don't need to mess around with much more at this point in his career.... But he also has an offspeed pitch...

you are right about that, he needs a third off speed pitch sooner or later.

Phil has had problems with his control in every start I've seen him pitch. Of course I only saw his first start vs Toronto and the KC start when he came back from injury so I'm hoping i'm wrong....because the kid has moxie

They only let him continue using the slider late last year and it's a nice pitch to have in his back pocket. Flaherty just said on the air that Phil is working on a cutter...

why work on a cutter and not the the slider? doesnt the cutter put as much if not more stress on your elbow as the slider?

Lets not forget that the Yankees had no plans of bringing Hughes up until August/September so that he can develop that change further. They had to deviate from that plan and bring him up in April and then he got hurt for 3 months, so now he has to get EVERYTHING back all while developing his change in a pennant race. Not easy for the YOUNGEST pitcher in baseball pitching for the Yankees. He is still in May form, it is hard to expect greatness right now.

What's odd is that that is his trademark. Very good command. He just hasn't shown it yet on a consistent basis.

I think when Hughes can throw his curve for strikes and not hang it, he's fine with just the fastball and curve. His changeup is a decent third pitch, it's got good potential but it's not there yet.

yea but he needs a 3rd pitch which he has confidence so that when his curve isnt working, he isnt forced to just rely on fastball

He had his command in both Texas and Cleveland, and he had it working against Baltimore as well. His only 2 starts with ''poor'' control were his major league debut and his return from a 3 month injury, so he gets passes for those. Tonight he simply doesn't have it for whatever reason.

Can we all agree that thats the frustrating part right now? I mean its hard to comprehend that he is only 21.

It's not like he has completely abandoned the slider. The first time through the order he throws primarily fastballs and curves, with an occasional changeup. 2nd and 3rd time you'll see him throw a lot more of his secondary pitches.

the cutter doesn't put nearly as much strain on the elbow as the slider.

I agree and it is not that they have ever been better than us, they have just had our #. Right now they can put scosia at the plate and he would go 5-5 and a JHS pitcher would pitch 7 scoreless innings...
