Phil Hughes Update

Just got an e-mail back from Phil Hughes. He threw his second session of batting practice today in Tampa today and it went well.

He is scheduled to make a rehab start for Class A Tampa on Monday at home against Dunedin then will head for Trenton and Scranton.

If Hughes has no issues, it

  Are you serious? The kid is hitting .312 as an 18 year old in High A Tampa and not striking out much and now you are playing strawman?

Carlos Lee is worthless. Look, I get all the Tabata hype. But hearts next to a 1-4. Lets not get carried away. I just like to play Devils advocate around here and keep you guys grounded.

Now I'm glad we don't need to have anything about Edwar Ramirez on this thread anymore.

Funny thing is that almost every top teenage prospects have done worse than Tabata. Andruw Jones put up slightly better numbers, but he was 18 in low A ball and 19 in high A ball. Miguel Cabrera was also 18 in low A and 19 in high A, but other than some extra power, his numbers weren't even close to Tabata's at those levels. And those two guys were considered absolutely monstrous as teenage prospects in the lower levels. With a nice show of power in the second half, Tabata will be extremely highly regarded (as if he isn't already).

If you had to draw out a perfect plan for a 16 year old to get to the majors as quickly as possible, Tabata's career would be a very good benchmark.

Exactly, the kid has been incredibly steady at each level and has given absolutely no reason to question how great he can be. Look at the consistency.

2005 (GCL Yankees - 44 games): .314/.382/.417 - .799 OPS
2006 (Charleston - 86 games): .298/.377/.420 - .797 OPS
2007 (Tampa - 71 games): .312/.380/.387 - .767 OPS

The power is slightly down this season, but that is undoubtedly related to the wrist injury that lingered from last season and came up again in winter ball. In the last month or so, he has already showed a ton of signs of being healed and putting up more extra base hits. Also, I've heard comments from scouts that say he hits the most balls for flyouts to the warning track. Once he gets older and stronger, those will all become home runs. He is going to be a stud.

Horne absolutely dealing so far: 5 innings, 3 hits, 1 BB, 6 Ks, 0 R. ERA is down to 2.19. I don't really understand what is preventing him from getting the recognition he deserves. He will probably surpass Buchholz for the EL lead in Ks.

Brett Gardner has to be one of the most underrated prospects in baseball. I've rarely heard scouts talking about him, yet he has speed comparable to Juan Pierra and Scott Podsednik with the on-base ability of Grady Sizemore. I'm not quite sure how tools like those can go unnoticed to such an extent.

Ian Kennedy: 6 innings, 2 hits, 3 BB, 2 ER, 4 Ks - ERA at 2.43

Promote him to Trenton

If Tabata is in Trenton for the stretch run, that Trenton team will run away with the Eastern League title.

Gardner and Tabata, along with Miranda in the lineup. Then of course the 3 headed monster in the starting rotation of Joba/Kennedy/Horne.

By the way, when Hughes makes his rehab start for Trenton, for that one day we will get a preview of a Hughes/Joba/Kennedy/Horne rotation (minus Wang)

Hughes was a lot worse in the Future's Game last year because they go out there throwing strictly fastballs instead of showing off their stuff.
