Cliff Lee: Luxury or ultimately a necessity?

Post#1 » by Dr. Detfink » Sat Jun 26, 2010 12:58 pm

Today, AJ Burnett takes the mound vs. Los Angeles...and I wonder if Brian Cashman will have his eyes clued to the TV set with his phone speed dialed to Seattle.

Do you think the Yanks might initiate further talks for Cliff Lee if Burnett suffers another meltdown, keep in mind the Yanks are planning to go easy on Hughes in the second half.

I sure wouldn't mind us trading for him, as long as we don't give up too much.

Yeah I'm all for trading for him if the cost isnt through the roof. I'd flip Pitching prospect or Joba and a Catcher Prospect for Lee. but can't say i'd dish more

I really don't want to trade for him during the season when we can get him in 6 months (unless he signs an extension with a team he is traded to which is possible, so the situation has to be monitored).

I can't even imagine what Lee would cost us. Montero and Banuelos? Romine, Betances, and another good prospect? It can get out of hand, and I think our pitching should be good enough to win as it is now.

Lee will most likely hit the market, it doesn't make sense from a financial standpoint for him to sign an extension in the next 2 weeks. He knows he's going to get more on the open market with teams bidding for him. I'd rather see the team sure up the other holes on the team, particularly getting another reliable arm in the pen and upgrading the bench. But then again, if it doesn't cost too much I wouldn't be opposed to getting Lee either. A Sabathia-Lee-Hughes-Pettite rotation is ridiculous.

Well the Yankees get to face Lee tonight. If Lee is absolutely mind blowing. I would not put it pass anyone in the yankees front office to put together a package and proposal tonight.

You guys are all ready the favorites to win it all(that is if you make the playoffs). Sure AJ has been sucking lately, but that doesn't mean ya have to trade for him. You have three proven starters and up-and-coming one with Hughes. It's best for the Yanks management to play it safe, no need to make moves just to make moves. If any team needs Lee, it's the Mets. If we get him, without giving up Mejia, we're clearly the front-runner in the NL. Especially the NL East, since there's not much separation in this division. And plus, maybe we'd get to see another subway series again. 8-)

Of course it wouldn't hurt but do they really need him now? Can't they just do like Sabathia and wait for him to be a FA and pay him.

Yanks are going to need him if Burnett continues his struggles, Hughes can't spot his curveball and Pettitte regresses...

But probably, Burnett will give the yankees 4.5 era/200 innings again this year, Hughes will have flashes of ace, and pettitte will pitch at least #3 rotation type stuff for the rest of the year.

If the price for Lee is Romine + a pitching prospect, I'd do it.

Maybe Romine + Betances for Lee + relief pitcher?

Romine and Betances is a lot to give up for a pitcher they can sign in 6 months. I'd rather just wait until the off-season to go after the guy. Sure up the holes they have on the bench and in the bullpen, then hope one of Vasquez and/or Burnett can get hot before the playoffs.

Betances is the apex hit or miss prospect. Romine is a definite major leaguer soon enough but Betances is at least 2 years away, and might be nothing more than a relief pitcher because of the potential for mechanical problems and injury issues. I like Brackman more, and we're dealing from a position of strength.
