Yankees need another Bat

Post#1 » by Christophersp10 » Wed Jul 21, 2010 6:39 pm

Jesus Montero cannot come up soon enough. Cano is getting walked left and right whenever there is a runner in scoring position. How is one of the best hitters in the league hitting in front of Miranda?

I think they need to go get Adam Dunn from the Washington Nationals 4 Ramiro Pena and a Prospect .

Problem is Dunn isn't going to come cheap and certainly isn't going to come for Pena & a prospect. Nationals would be better off just keeping Dunn and getting the Type A compensation at the end of the year (or whenever he's a FA).

I agree they do need a bat to bolster the bench but they don't need a huge bat, just an upgrade and a capable PH late in games. Montero can probably be a pretty decent PH for playoffs and they will probably go out and get 1 by the deadline. A Hinske or Hairston type pick-up like they had last year would be sufficient IMO.

They need help in the pen the most though. That was the difference between LA & PHI and the Yankees last year. LA couldn't get anyone out late in games whether it was their closer, set-up man, or middle relief. Philly couldn't rely on Lidge or anyone else they threw out there, while the Yankees could.

The Nats are also supposedly putting on the full court press to get Dunn signed to an extension. With Strasburg and Zimmerman already there and Harper likely to not need more than a couple of seasons in the minors (especially if they're going to put him in the OF) they can smell contention and ticket sales. Get Dunn inked and get Harper to the bigs post-haste and you're looking at a brutal 3-4-5 with a legit ace who will sell out the stadium every fifth day in a decidedly so-so division.

**** ADAM DUNN! I'd rather call up Montero before paying that kind of coin.

Seriously...the Yanks don't need a strike out machine that will sputter out in the clutch in the playoffs. To win in the post Steroid era, you need a stockpile of power arms and good .280 hitter who can advance the runner with a little pop.

I wonder what Montero has to do the rest of this season to get a shot, if its even possible for them to give him a chance. I have a feeling they don't plan to give him a role this season, but he'll definitely get ABs in September.

I think they need to give him some AB's when the roster expands to see how he looks. If he isn't getting over-matched and looks comfortable he can be a big additional to the team come playoff time as a late game pinch hitter. It's worth a shot, it can't hurt.

dude, no offense, chris, i know this is a forum for opinions and stuff... but you are the typical new york fan that everyone hates. Miranda has been absolutely BEASTLY in his DH role (check his numbers). He's OPS+ at the DH position is 150+ in limited time. The dude draws walks and hits for good power... he's basically Matsui light right now. What are you complaining about?

the yankees DO NOT need a DH. That should be used to rest Posada and Arod to spell their defensive duties but still retain their bat. What we need is a better bench to stop having Ramiro Pena play whole games when he should be coming in as a defensive substitution late. If we can trade for bench players like Hinske and Hairston last year, this team will be much better by taking away Pena's terrible bat.

I do support bringing Montero up, but he has a small injury. I hope the Yankees bring him up in September just for a cup of coffee... it sets his arbitration earlier but the Yanks have money to spend.
