He could be an amazing fit here...take pitches, get on base at a high rate, and provide some pop. Any hole in the offense (not that there really was one) would close up immediately.

Assuming we take on his entire contract since we aren't cheap like the Phillies, that would mean we probably give up mid level prospects at best.

He started off slow really slow this year. HIS OPS the past month is 1.020.

He cannot hit left handers so expect him to be the DH against righties.

His ops against righties is .875 with 12 HR's 45 RBI's.

He is going to be playing in a much better offense.

Berkman would require that any team that trades for him not to pick up his 2011 option, according to Alyson Footer of the Astros (Twitter links).

He wants to be a free agent and probably get one last big payday if possible. Further notes is that he wants to return to the Astros after this season.

And Marcus Thames can. Platoon.

Davidoff says it's for a 'non-prospect minor leaguer', wow.

Rosenthal says it will take 24 hours to clear:

# Ken_Rosenthal

A twist on Berkman: Due to his 10-5 rts, trade to #Yankees would not be official until after expiration of 24-hr window (Source says he gave approval earlier today, so everything should be OK. But official word would not be until Sat. aft.

Sounds like guys such as Nova and/or Adams may be involved. As of now, Nova has not been scratched from his start for Scranton tonight.

If the best player they're giving up is Nova it's a deal the Yankees need to make. They're a win now team and Berkman has shown positive improvements every month since returning from his injury.

I hope it's not Nova but even so, he wasn't cracking the Yankees rotation anytime soon. Next years rotation looks like CC, AJ, Hughes, and 2 of the following 3 Pettitte, Javy, Cliff Lee.

It would be nice to keep Nova to give him a shot to crack the rotation next year, but the writing is on the wall...he can't even be given a chance over guys like Mitre and Moseley, so the Yanks clearly don't see him as ever fitting in.

Yeah, I can get behind this if it is indeed a non-prospect going back the other way. Berkman's been solid in 200 some-odd PA's since the start of June, his numbers are a bit depressed by a somewhat low BABIP, and though he's not the power source he once was, he still brings a high OBP to the plate. I'd probably slot him in the 2-hole in the lineup and move Swish down to 6th, where his superior power and BA will be more useful in the copious runners on/RISP situations he'd see. I wonder about his odd home/road splits (Minute Maid has played as a pitchers park that gives a boost to HRs and depresses everything else) but I'd imagine his job here would be to get on base first and foremost.

BTW, Nova's on the mound tonight for Scranton, so he's not going to be in the deal.
