OT, Lance Berkman very close to going to the Yankees

Post#1 » by Christophersp10 » Fri Jul 30, 2010 9:23 pm

Looks like Juan Miranda for Lance. Lance has .875 OPS with 12 HR's and 45 RBI's against Righties this year. Left hand power bat with the short porch in RF.

If we get Lance Berkman for Juan Miranda than Id be very very happy. I thought wed have to give wuite a bit more than that. Its a 1 year rental also so thats good. Switch hitter and should have his numbers go up in Yankee Stadium. Very solid pick up.

If it's just for MIranda that would be an absolutely terrific deal for the Yanks.

I saw it on nyyfans.com uncomfirmed.

Davidoff says it's for a 'non-prospect minor leaguer', wow.

Rosenthal says it will take 24 hours to clear:

# Ken_Rosenthal

A twist on Berkman: Due to his 10-5 rts, trade to #Yankees would not be official until after expiration of 24-hr window (Source says he gave approval earlier today, so everything should be OK. But official word would not be until Sat. aft.

Oh alright. Because I saw this:

KenDavidoff #Astros indeed expected to get non-prospect minor-leaguer(s) and payroll relief from #Yankees in return for Berkman.

but I couldnt find anything on Miranda

Another Power bat in that lineup. He must going to hit like 6th after Cano (If traded for).

Off Topic, but why did the Phillies trade Cliff Lee. They could have had him, Halliday and Oswalt. To go along with the rest of that team.....

Phillies said that they wanted to restock their minor leagues. Cliff Lee has let it be known that he wants to be a free agent and big money after 2010. Phillies didn't want to resign him after this year or pay him the 9 million for this year.

Well Miranda kinda isn't a "prospect" minor leaguer in the sense of a high end prospect.

Done Deal according to Joel Sherman. Yankees give up 1 non prospect and it's a pure 2 month rental.

Will be our DH, give a spell to swisher and gardner in left. Love the move!

berkman can't play the outfield, he hasn't played for 3 years.

he'll be DHing against righties and Posada will catch. When lefties are pitching, I think he'll be given limited starting time and will be used as a pinch hitter, and Posada can DH while Cerv gets reps at catching. Deepens our lineup no doubt.

Per ESPN:
Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman has waived his no-trade clause and a deal is in place to move him to the New York Yankees, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Friday.

The Berkman deal likely will be completed before Saturday's trade deadline. The Astros will pick up $4 million of the $7 million owed to Berkman this year and in his 2011 option, sources said.

The Yankees will send two prospects to the Astros: reliever Mark Melancon and infielder Jimmy Paredes.

Paredes is a nothing, but it kinda stings to lose Melancon. He was one of my favorites from the '06 draft haul and even though he'd gone backwards this season, I still think he's got the ability to be an effective ML reliever.

Oh well, have to give to get I suppose.

A shame that Melancon never got a legitimate chance with the major league club, especially with middle relief still being a weak point. You can make the case that Berkman's a minor and somewhat unnecessary upgrade to this club and wasn't worth giving up any value, but losing a good-but-not-great relief prospect isn't going to cripple the farm, either. And potential arbitration pick(s) in the offseason could soften the blow.

I can't believe the Astros are giving money to get this done. This deadline has been a clinic in bad GMing.

Berkman's arb situation is an interesting one. He's probably going to come in as a type-B and he demanded that any team trading for him promise to buy out his 2011 option, likely so he can fish for a multi-year deal this winter. With that in mind, it makes a lot of sense to offer him arbitration but would he really be able to resist accepting since it guarantees him a deal in the $16-$18 million range, thus making a total mess out of our budget and possibly torpedoing our pursuit of Lee?

If it was my call, I'd probably just let him walk without an offer. They'll almost certainly make an offer to Javy who is likely to decline so any pick lost by signing Lee/Crawford/etc can be recouped there.

It sounds like he demanded that the option isn't picked up so that he can go back to Houston. My guess would be that the Yanks agreed not to offer him arbitration as part of the deal so Houston won't have to forfeit draft picks to bring him back.
