I love the fantasy land that he lives in. 30 million for a 36 year old hitting .260. Keep dreaming.

Is there any proof this story is real?

I guess Pharmcat is as optimistic about the Yankees as he is the Knicks...at least with the latter he has an excuse to expect the worst..

So what? He's Derek Jeter. This is MLB where there is no cap. So Derek as a free agent is allowed to name his price. Whether or not the Yanks will comply is another thing. I don't think Jetes will get A-Rod money but he'll get a handsome offer to stay a Yankee.

I'm not as worried about that type of money going to him because he's having a bad year as opposed to because he's 35 years old and isn't getting any younger. If they give him a 3 or 4 year deal for 20-22 million a year I don't see him turning that down because he knows he isn't getting any more then that on the market.

Rigghhhhtttttttttttttttttt. There is no cap but the Yankees do have a budget. Derek Jeter is making 20 million this year for hitting .260 with 10 HR's and 50 RBI's. Do you think that is money well spent? Yankees have a ton of minor league prospects who can come up make 400k and provide the same production. 4 year deal and Jeter is going to be 37-40 ages during that contract. Can you imagine how even worse his production is going to get? .260 for Jeter in a Contract Year!

Lets see how real of a team player Jeter becomes. He so far hasn't show any sign of wanting to move from SS or the top 2 in the order. Do you really think a .260 hitter who never walks and always gidp's should be hitting 1st or 2nd in the Yankees order? Do you really think a 36 year old ss with the range of a slug should be playing ss on the Yankees?

Yankees overpaying for Arod after 2007 is one thing. He was there whole offense and was coming off of a .300 55 HR 150 RBI season. Overpaying for MR .260 is something else.

I laugh with this budget bull. Cash said this same stuff then went after CC, AJ, and stole Teixiera from the Red Sox.

And yet, the Yanks were minutes from trading for cliff Lee and signing him to an extension. Never mind the Yanks are interested in Carl Crawford in the off season.

This is what I hate about modern sports fans. They root for an organization that can afford to keep their players and they won't hesitate to dump them or get in bed with another star like a cast member from the Joisey shore.

Like seinfeld said, you root for laundry.

And A-Rod, post roids isn't even worth A-rod's contract. At least Jeter can play. Alex is about as delicate as fine china.

Young fans are about to get a wake up call...a hitter Jeter's age is perfectly normal to hit .268-.280. It is very rare to have a guy hitting over .300 after 35 yrs.

Jeter has us over a barrel whether we like it or not. There are no options to replace him, his agent will be able to pitch this season as an outlier for a player who's put up big numbers in his mid-30s, and he's Derek **** Jeter...face of the franchise, captain, ZOMG TEH 5 RINGS!!!11111, etc.

If we can get him to take 2 years and $40-$50 million, just grit your teeth, accept it, and be happy that he didn't get a 4-year deal.

There are plenty of options as far as replacing Derek Jeter the player. The problem is replacing Derek Jeter the icon.

Exactly. I think the yankees need to let him go and use that 20 mill contract for another star player in his prime.

If Jeter really holds firm, and expects $20 million, then perhaps we should look in a new direction. As long as he is willing to negotiate, we have to do what we can to bring him back.

Bad time for a bad year. I don't know what he has in mind but I'd love for him to take a year by year contract like Pettitte. I'm pretty sure he wants to play till he's 40 though so he's probably going to want 4 years.

Are you joking now? Arod missed a ton of games this year because he got hit by a freak line drive while standing on third base. It could have happened to anyone.

Arod isn't worth his contract? Is the contract overpaid? Sure but he is the major reason why the Yankees won in 2009. ARod hit 30 HR's and close to 130 RBI's this year in only 135? games. He had better numbers than 99.999999 percent of all the 3b in baseball.
