I love how the Yanks talk tough with Jeter at the same time, they have 140M in a sock drawer for Cliff Lee.
I can't blame Jeter. People forget how much of a joke the Yanks used to be. The Knicks got nothing about George having Winfield investigated, Steve Howe, Whitson, and the tradition of finishing under .500...
I for one hope Jetes holds out a little longer just to embarrass the Yankees front office who forfeited home field advantage in their new palace. I love going to games and every damn inning they interrupt the game by announcing ticket upgrade to fill in the lower bowl. Unbelievable...
Again, its comical listening to Cashman who tries to play himself off like Billy Beane. Love those waiver wire deals for Sergio Mitre.
At the end of the day, we're witnessing to a different era to the NY Yankees: a future without Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera.
Dude give it up already. In case you haven't realized, this may be a business but the goal is to win the WS. The yankees have 140mil for cliff lee because he is a top 5 pitcher in baseball, and PITCHING wins championships. If Jeter was the best ss in baseball, even coming off a down season, in a time when he wasn't 36 or declining, the yankees would have a huge paycheck for him as well. Oh wait, that happened 10 years ago in case you forgot.
Anyway, the yankees didn't bring the media into the negotiations, CASEY CLOSE did. The yankees never said anything other then it could get messy. CASEY CLOSE said the yankees offer was baffling, which in then prompted a response from cashman.
The yankees can play hard ball because in the world of business, if your investment starts to bring back negative returns, you don't stick with it, you dump it. Jeter had his worst season EVER, last year and to think just because he won 4 ws over 10 years ago he feels we owe it to him to pay him 4x his value? PLEASE, don't let the door hit you on your way out.
The Yankees are going to be a 90+win team with or dare I say it, WITHOUT Jeter. Until he can realize this, he is going to look like an idiot. This is a total different negotation then with A-Rod, where the yankees bid against themselves because at the time he was coming off a 56hr 140rbi season and was OUR cleanup hitter (which he is going to be for the next 5+ years) whether its at DH or 3b. In that time, his contract declines but has milestone incentives so the overall value may seem high, but in reality he's just making probably 10% off the revenue his milestone will bring in.
The yankees learned from that mistake deal with a-rod and have come prepared this time with Jeter. Not offering arbitration was a great move by cashman, as now jeter has no fall back plan that could net him 20+mil a year. If he had offered and jeter accepted it, put up his career averages, cashman would of then been forced to cave into his demands, however cashman doesn't have to cave in because he is coming off HIS worst year EVER and has been showing signs of decline in the field for many years already.
Sorry Derek, I appreciate what you did for us oh so long ago but in todays world of "what have you done for me lately", you might be SOL.
