OT: Official Derek Jeter Thread

Post#1 » by bigball123 » Wed Nov 24, 2010 6:54 pm

Post all of the drama here!

I am pretty sure that we all know how this movie will end. The Yanks will up the offer, DJ will have a 'classy' press conference talking about his older age, but the fact that he can still contribute heavily, and this whole thing will be forgotten by game 2 with Cliff Lee on the mound! :D

Jeter needs to stop being greedy. The Yankees are giving him the highest salary of any SS and he wants more SMH

I don't think the Yankees are going to up the offer. Perhaps they may throw a bonus in if he gets 3,500 hits or wins another World Series.

Well, yea I agree Jeter should be happy at the offer, then again the Yankees have handled the situation poorly by dragging it out to the public. We all know Hank is a loud mouth but Brian Cashman?

I love how the Yanks talk tough with Jeter at the same time, they have 140M in a sock drawer for Cliff Lee.

I can't blame Jeter. People forget how much of a joke the Yanks used to be. The Knicks got nothing about George having Winfield investigated, Steve Howe, Whitson, and the tradition of finishing under .500...

I for one hope Jetes holds out a little longer just to embarrass the Yankees front office who forfeited home field advantage in their new palace. I love going to games and every damn inning they interrupt the game by announcing ticket upgrade to fill in the lower bowl. Unbelievable...

Again, its comical listening to Cashman who tries to play himself off like Billy Beane. Love those waiver wire deals for Sergio Mitre.

At the end of the day, we're witnessing to a different era to the NY Yankees: a future without Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera.

It is the end of that era, but nothing lasts forever. The Yankees have been great before those guys. They have been great with those guys. They will be great without those guys. Eventually you have to let go and move forward. If you get nostalgic and try to hold on too long, it can set you back for years. Sports is a business, and in order to be successful you have to be able to replenish talent. Sometimes it is hard for the talent to understand this concept, but that's just the way it is.

The Yankees were more than generous with Jeter when he was 26, and had his whole future ahead of him. They gave him a contract which was worth more than his actual production. He was paid like a superstar slugger, and he never was that. Now that his time is limited, they are still being generous with him and basically bidding against themselves for him.

Lastly, if it could happen to Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan, then it can happen to Jeter too.

Free-agent shortstop Derek Jeter and his agent, Casey Close, desire a six-year, $150 million contract, according to a report in The New York Daily News.

Jeter and Close aren't budging on their desire for $25 million annually.

The Yankees recently offered Jeter a three-year, $45 million deal.

Both sides of the negotiations have admitted that the talks have gotten "messy."

how about 6 years 150 mil at 37 years of age.. so when he is 43 he will be making 25 mil? come on jeter.. just ridiculous. we already made a mistake with the posada and A-rod deals, no need to repeat that.. 45 mil and 3 years is a heck of a contract.. still the highest paid middle infielder in baseball...

Dude give it up already. In case you haven't realized, this may be a business but the goal is to win the WS. The yankees have 140mil for cliff lee because he is a top 5 pitcher in baseball, and PITCHING wins championships. If Jeter was the best ss in baseball, even coming off a down season, in a time when he wasn't 36 or declining, the yankees would have a huge paycheck for him as well. Oh wait, that happened 10 years ago in case you forgot.

Anyway, the yankees didn't bring the media into the negotiations, CASEY CLOSE did. The yankees never said anything other then it could get messy. CASEY CLOSE said the yankees offer was baffling, which in then prompted a response from cashman.

The yankees can play hard ball because in the world of business, if your investment starts to bring back negative returns, you don't stick with it, you dump it. Jeter had his worst season EVER, last year and to think just because he won 4 ws over 10 years ago he feels we owe it to him to pay him 4x his value? PLEASE, don't let the door hit you on your way out.

The Yankees are going to be a 90+win team with or dare I say it, WITHOUT Jeter. Until he can realize this, he is going to look like an idiot. This is a total different negotation then with A-Rod, where the yankees bid against themselves because at the time he was coming off a 56hr 140rbi season and was OUR cleanup hitter (which he is going to be for the next 5+ years) whether its at DH or 3b. In that time, his contract declines but has milestone incentives so the overall value may seem high, but in reality he's just making probably 10% off the revenue his milestone will bring in.

The yankees learned from that mistake deal with a-rod and have come prepared this time with Jeter. Not offering arbitration was a great move by cashman, as now jeter has no fall back plan that could net him 20+mil a year. If he had offered and jeter accepted it, put up his career averages, cashman would of then been forced to cave into his demands, however cashman doesn't have to cave in because he is coming off HIS worst year EVER and has been showing signs of decline in the field for many years already.

Sorry Derek, I appreciate what you did for us oh so long ago but in todays world of "what have you done for me lately", you might be SOL.

So Derek Jeter is asking for more money than Ryan Howard got, and more than Albert Pujols will probably get. Nice.

If I were Cashman, I would pull the current offer off the table, and offer his true market value to him: 2 years $16 million.

If the goal is to win the World Series, what compelling player do the Yankees have to replace Jeter right now?

I love reading these comments. Yea, the Yanks had 40 million for Kei Igawa plus 10 million just to negotiate...but with Jeter its all, "yea, we are drawing a line in the sand."

This isnt the Kansas City Royals but a mizier like Cashman sure makes it sound like it.

What a joke. I hope this drags on because as a Yankee fan I am never so embarrassed that The one guy who played his professional career without a dent is suddenly humiliated in public. This is the most revered Yankee since Mattingly.

I really hope Jeter moves on just to stick it to the Yankees. Possibly to join Mattingly with the Dodgers.

im sorry, there is no way to justify 150 million to a 270 hitter on the wrong side of 30s with declining range

You act like .270 Is the worst of the Yanks stars...it's not. Teixiera and A-Rod who get paid more than Jeter had awful years as well. A-rod is right behind Jeter, had two seasons where he couldn't play every day after admitting to steroids conveniently after re-signing for 30M a season.

Guys, pre-steroid era...you're happy with .270 at a guy who merely has to adjust to his body. Please note his season of .334 was only one year earlier.

Lastly, if you think Cliff Lee is ok with the Yanks making public their tough talk stance about their captain, I got a bridge in Brooklyn to see you cheap.

Players do not like it when owners and GMs air their dirty laundry about one if them. It's part of the reason why so many Boston players leave to come to NYC.

Not just in MLB but in all sports, this effects the relationship with FA an retired players who are now commentators.

You guys keep saying this is business, what kind of business policy is a boss talking smak about his employee? Ever go into a employee evaluation? What if your boss made it public about you without ever really discussing your raise or continued service?

I see Jeter's agent denied that 140M number. More work by the press to make this situation even uglier. Cashman seems to think he's so smart. Go on, by all means make more public your business with Jeter and see how good that is with trying to lure Cliff Lee.

The irony is, Yankees preferred the Yankees shut up to the press (see Sheffield to Detroit) and yet, ownership is lipping off.

So apparently the $25 million number was blown completely out of proportion. He is merely asking for only $22-$24 million per year. Whew, what a relief. I was afraid he was really expecting something ridiculous.

You keep bringing up this Kei Igawa point but it makes no sense and your sticking your own foot in your mouth.

So the Yankees made a mistake and are paying kei igawa 5mil per year to play for the AAA team. Lets go and make ANOTHER mistake and pay an aging SS who has by far the worst range in the MLB, coming off the worst season of his career, not even by a little bit but by HUGE margins, just because he's been with the franchise through thick and thin.

How does that make any sense? In the world of what have you done for me lately, Jeter is declining. A point your truly missing is that only 1 person has EVER gotten a bigger contract then Jeter. His name is Alex Rodriguez. Hell, his last contract was worth more then the 1 Joe Mauer just signed and contracts have been inflated almost 2x the value then they were back then.

So per your opinion, lets go and make more mistakes and hurt the future of a franchise just so we can pay someone for their past. RIGHT, a good GM learns from his mistakes whether they are bad signings (Pavano, Wright, Igawa) or bad re-signings where they are only bidding against themselves (A-Rod).

Do you see any Mariano / Yankees jabberin back and forth in the media? I don't think so.

Stop blaming the Yankees and get over your obsession with Cashman being terrible and Jeter being the good guy. If history serves me right, no 36+ ss has ever been good, and it showed last year. The yankees use a lot more stats then just BA/OBP/OPS in order to judge their players and I'm 100% sure they have done their due diligence in determining if this past season was simply a fluke (ex: low babip) or if it was by a simple decline (ex: higher gb%)

I won't be replying anymore to detfink, he's too incompetent to understand the logistics or scenario.

Truth: Derek Jeter needs the Yankees more than the Yankees need Derek Jeter.

If he played his career in Milwaukee, he never would have even gotten a $100 million dollar contract, let alone the $189 million he is coming off of, and he would never of had the endorsements he has (Jordan, Ford, etc).

Really, basing a player's impact on batting average? You know you're stuff, you're way better than that. Any person who watched more than 15 Yankees games last season knows that Jeter would've been the #9 hitter if his name was Derek Jones. Double plays, strikeouts, countless weak groundouts to 2B, and deteriorating defense. He was simply bad for about 75% of the season.

The Yankees are doing an absolute favor to Jeter by offering him $15 million a season. He would be the highest paid SS in baseball, a position that he is getting worse at every year. He didn't play the last decade for free, he is the 2nd highest paid player in baseball history behind only ARod. If anything, he should accept $10 million and say that he understands he isn't what he used to be and he isn't going to make this a big deal. On the open market he wouldn't get over $7 or $8 million, they're offering him double that.

He'll get more because its a negotiation, but the Yankees started with a very very fair deal. If he goes to any other team, he will be a nobody and destroy his legacy. It would be one thing if the Yankees low balled him with a $5 million offer, but they are willing to grossly overpay the guy.

Return to New York Yankees
