Signing Jones, the Yanks are thinking a little more pop coming off the bench. Kind of similar to Ruben Sierra's role. I'm happy because I honestly don't think Damon can play the field, which is part of why Detroit let him depart despite Johnny wanting to stay.

Here's a question...would you rather have Vlad at 5-6M more? Cause I don't know where Jones conditioning is at but I know Vlad is perfect as part-time fielder and still carries a potent bat.

Vlad as a part-time fielder? Is the last time you saw him field on ESPN classic or something? Posada is the everyday DH, there isn't really room for Vlad. -Jitpal

vlad is a strictly DH, with posada there, and arod/jeter needing days off + montero, no dh here left for vlad


jones is a good signing, can still field the 3 OF and hit lefties

Did you see Vlad in the field during his last year in LA? The guy looked terrible. The only reason to consider Vlad is as a DH, and even then it's unrealistic because Jeter, Posada, and A-Rod will occupy it to conserve their health.

Andruw Jones? Bleh.

Did you see Vlad in the field against us in the playoffs? He might be worse than Thames.

Did you see what Vlad did to us at the plate in the playoffs? I believe it was Texas that advanced to the next round, was it not?

Jones is certainly better defensively, but he doesn't hit good pitching. His stats look good against RHPs because of the HRs and walks. But he's a mistake hitter-- and he's gotten fat to boot.

Maybe Jones was the best of a bad lot, but I'm not excited about this signing. If it had been up to me I would have tried to keep Berkman. Failing that, I would have gone after a guy like Milledge, who is 8-9 years younger than Jones. Just my $0.02. Hope I'm wrong.

But again, he's a 4TH outfielder, NOT A STARTER. How much play do you think he gets over a faster, younger Gardner?

The Yanks won 2 WS with a STONE (aging Bernie Williams) playing FULL TIME.

The Yanks can survive signing a 4th outfielder who can offer some protection and LATE pinch hit for Gardner in getting an RBI with two outs.

Again, he's a 4th outfielder.

IF you wanted a defensive replacement, Greg Golson is your man. Last season the young man threw OUT Carl Crawford by throwing a strike from RF to 3B. Andruw Jones is not a young man who can produce on that level. Once his conditioning went to crap, so did his skills.

But since so many brought up the playoffs...wasn't it the Yanks DEFENSE that was the problem last season? Or the fact NO ONE could hit to save their life outside of Cano?

Well, Vladi is certainly the best hitter available, although IMHO Berkman isn't far behind. The Cardinals plan to play Berkman full time in LF so he can't be that bad in the field.

It's not just guys who can hit statistically, it's guys who can hit good pitching, which is what you see more often in the playoffs.

Yeah this is kinda a weird choice. Just checking some of the candidates out there the following were options (my list is a little outdated so not sure if any of these guys have signed already and/or retired):

Bill Hall - has pop and call play all positions (he even pitched).

Corey Patterson - can hit for power and steal bases.

Brad Hawpe - was an All-Star in 2009, can hit for power.

Xavier Nady - former Yankee has had injury problems but he would be fine as a 4th OF'er.

Austin Kearns - could he really be any worse than Andruw Jones (at this point in Jones' career)?

Jim Edmonds - hey if the Yankees are interested in former all-stars pass their prime...

Eric Hinske - another former (kinda) Yankee, has pop and can play all OF positions.

Jose Guillen - more of a 3rd OF'er with a lot of pop, but hey it's the Yankees so they can probably afford to pay a 4th OF'er starting OF money.

Jason Kubel - did the Twins pick his option up? If not this is one big boy with one big bat.

Magglio Ordonez - not sure if he resigned or what not but even though power numbers aren't great as they were in his hey day, he still hits for average (which is something that the rest of these guys do not).

Hawpe, Nady and Kearns were signed I believe. I don't know about the rest. Jones is a better defender than all of those guys though. He also has hit in the playoffs, although that was in another life. -Jitpal

Yanks weren't beat in the playoffs because of defense. They lost because they had no one to come off the bench that could extend an inning. When they had to depend on Gardner's bat at the bottom of the 7th and later innings, impotence had set in.

If you wanted defense, Greg Golson already proved he has a canon for an arm when he threw out Carl Crawford (a player we'll be seeing very soon). That's not what killed the Yanks against the Rangers.

I don't see Jones 31 year old defense being better than Golson. His hitting could be but he doesn't hit with the power he had with Atlanta.

Somehow the Yanks bats went to sleep against a Texas Bullpen that the Giants, one of the worst offenses past Buster Posey, ATE alive.

Cashman is obviously confident Teixiera and Jeter bounce back, A-Rod can stay healthy, and Granderson can hit better than he did last season...
