Yankees add David Aardsma

he Yankees announced today they have signed David Aardsma, a 30-year-old righty who saved 69 games in 2009 and 2010 for the Seattle Mariners but did not pitch last year after undergoing Tommy John surgery last July 22.

Brian Cashman, who just announced the deal in the Yankees clubhouse, called the signing "an R&D move'' -- for Research & Development -- meaning Aardsma, who will immediately be placed on the DL, is targeted more for next year than this season, although the GM did not rule out the possibility that Aardsma could pitch in the second half of the 2012 season.

"He's about a month behind Joba,'' Cashman said, referring to Joba Chamberlain, who had his surgery last June. "He's a guy who could help us this year, but who we expect to help us next year.''

Can't complain. Aardsma is a hard thrower and, for $100K, it's a low cost potential high reward move. The Yanks have done historically well with bringing in guys recovering from missed seasons for pocket change and having them contribute.

This is the Steve Karsay move. Stockpiling the pen seems to point that Cash sees the Yanks winning a lot of tight games. Why? Cause I don't think this team can score.

Yeah the offense I think might be better on paper than in real life. So do not disagree. Let's just hope that German whatever treatment actually really works and ARod can find some semblance of his former self or this could be a real long season. I'm actually hoping for a big(ish) season from Andruw Jones. Supposedly he's lost a lot of weight and is feeling great. Would be nice if they could add a real high energy ignitor type to the lineup though. Hopefully Gardner can do some of that.

Aardsma is a journeyman reliever coming off of TJ surgery. He's not Mo's replacement, he's the #4-5 guy in the bullpen, at best.

Robertson would get the first crack at closers job imo.
Then maybe Rafael Soriano if Robertson chokes.
Joba anyone? ugh no thanks. doesn't have closer mentality.

I think Robertson is the heir apparent. Still really hard to believe the numbers Robertson put up in the AL East last season.

66 INNINGS - 100 SO, 35 BB, 40 HITS ALLOWED, 8 RUNS ALLOWED, 1.08 ERA, 1 HR ALLOWED (critical in Yankee Stadium), 1.13 WHIP, 4-0 RECORD, OPPONENT SLG .226, OPPENENT BA .170.

And he seems like he doesn't get intimidated and is even keeled...so that'll work in his favor. And he's only 26 years old so plenty of years ahead of him.
