Will the Yanks reach 189M goal by 2014?

Since Hal Steinbrenner took over as owner of the NY Yankees, the team has emphasized "quality" bargains, which GM Brian Cashman has defended by calling it "Fiscal responsibility." Certainly not what most fans want to hear in the mission statement...Win a World Series (bargain shopping).
When the new collective bargaining agreement goes into effect, teams over the 189M mark will have to pay lux tax of 40% of the total amount over.
The Yankees have been preparing for this moment. First, Pettitte retired. Next Jeter, Posada, and Mo were told to serve notice.
Traditionally, the Yanks have always had the policy: You play for you contract. Basically reinforcing late manager Sparky Anderson's idea that a team of players in their year of their contract will win the World Series every season.
That policy is open to change in the near future as this 189M number becomes policy. Or will it?
With 79M committed to A-Rod (30M), CC Sabbathia (24M), Teixiera (23M) How will the Yankees deal with Robinson Cano's free agency?
Very difficult to field a full team, let alone deep squad with nearly 79M committed to 3 players AND remain to this number...
Ultimately leading a question to be asked of the Yankee front office who has given more than 2/3rds of the new stadium to the rich (that's the empty seats btw): HOW MUCH is a World Series ring worth to Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman?
For now, it's significantly less than George's "By any means necessary" bravado.

you beat me to this thread

I think its 80 million tied to 4 players
but anyways, absolutely, 189 is the # to work with
Swisher is gone, and maybe granderson too....especially if this team wants hamels

It's for THREE players. Not four. Those $$$ #s are based on ESPN's 2012 salary structure for 3 players. Here's the link:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/salaries/_/ ... rk-yankeesNo, I don't believe that number is easy to come up with, especially with Cano's impending FA...
Yanks ain't letting go of Granderson, he's too important to the club house in terms of work ethic, defense, and hustle.
Replace Swisher, sure...is that person going to take table scraps in a big market? Ideally, sure. Realistically, I have my doubts. We all miss Chad Curtis right?
We won't go after Hamels. That's a lock.
However, Olney talked about how Pineada was shell shocked in camp. Let's HOPE he's ready to go in 2013...cause I always give players ONE season to adjust. Olney also said, CAsh had to beg Hal for $$$ for Kuroda.
So NO....I don't believe Hal is as committed as his dad. It's about being competitive and charging first, winning a WS second....which is NOT A BAD THING. That's just modern sports.

Very interesting developments.
So in 2014 any $ over 189M, lux tax is 50%
BUT 2015, any $ over 17%
But I agree with Don LaGrega, this will be VERY interesting IF Granderson has a season like last year or Phil Hughes regains his form...or if Matt Cain comes knocking.
Cash said, he had to pitch for Teixiera in order to get him signed. He said, today...NO CHANCE. So times have changed.
BTW for those of you thinking those gaudy contracts for Tex and A-rod are movable, I got a bridge to sell ya.

On the other hand, while the Yankees will probably still lead MLB in spending their advantage will shrink. This season’s payroll is projected to be around $210 million and the Yankees already have $75 million committed to just four players (Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia) in 2014. They won’t stop being the top-spenders, but the days of the Yankees out-spending everyone else by $30-$50 million may be short-lived.

Who cares about Swisher ?? If they let Cano walk I think George will come alive from the grave and haunt Hal

Cano isn't going anywhere.
Swisher is gone.
I want Granderson to beast like last year but realistically if his numbers go down a bit next season is he more affordable?

Do the Yanks have any one in the minor league system groomed to take over in CF or RF?

Cano isn't going anywhere, but Swisher will walk. Granderson could go either way.

going forward
NY has open spot at C, 2 OF, and needs a closer
with a limit of 189, and cano probably demanding 25 mill
the way I see it, some of the name(s) have to be traded for cheap prospect to plug the hole(s) at minimum type salary

That's exactly how I see it, Cano has Scott "Rape a team" Boras as an agent. With A-Rod & Tex struggling to stay healthy and produce...NO ONE is taking their contract.
Therefore, we'll see HOW committed if they sign and trade Cano...and don't be surprised if they do that. Like I have been preaching since before the line was drawn in the sand with the captain, Yanks are not going to be like George. It's CLEAR they feel this dollar=championships.
And on principle, I believe that. Let's STOP giving away money to LUX tax so these small market teams can't pocket and cry like sisters of the poor.
But I have a problem that FAs, teams *looking at you Billy Beane* LIE like crazy in deals, and more often than not, the Yanks are the ones paying for it.

They are movable if you're willing to eat a percentage of their contracts...see Burnett. Tex more than ARod I think due to age and injury. In fact I would not be surprised if the Yankees look to move Texeira at some point within the next year or so. Cano is the only one that I think is definitely coming back. Granderson? I'm not so sure about that.
