Why a 5 man rotation, why not six?

I had read the reports that Freddy Garcia wasn't happy with Andy Pettitte's return, to which I say, "Um why?" Course, we should take all reports like a grain of salt but let's suspend disbelief and say that he is....

Right now, the Yankees' rotation is in a very transitionary period. They can't afford to assume that their youth is ready to be vital cogs in a rotation. Last year, we all thought Philip Hughes (age 25) was ready to build upon that 18 win season...turns out his arm was still suffering from the effects of that heavy work load.

Ivan Nova (also age 25) was forced into action and did a brilliant job last year. That was amplified when the Yanks signed Feliciano (still on the DL) and Soriano....This Spring, he's questionable to even make the rotation.

Now, there's no telling how Pineda is going to perform with his weight, velocity, and feeling overwhelmed with the Yankees. Let's say that's all B.S. After all the innings he threw in Seattle do we just say, "Hey just go out there and throw CC # of innings..." after giving up Montero?

This is why I SAY a SIX man rotation is a great idea going into the season. This team has too much talent not to perform. May slow starts can be offset with a few wily veterans mixed inbetween the youth.

We also don't know how health is going to affect the team. Last season, Cash went to his old standby Sergio Mitre before Nova forced him out. Let's not waste money on Mitre or Gaudin...

The AL East is too nasty for any rotation...let's keep the pitchers fresh and spread the wealth. Keep the youth from being overworked and overwhelmed but as a learning process.

CC sabathia prefers to pitch every 5 days and struggles on longer rotation

but I do agree with your premise
