I understand that. Hence I used the word "Could have..." because no one could have prevented the Yankees from paying Kuroda that sum but the Yankees themselves.

Honestly, they should have traded Hughes instead of Burnett. Hughes has the deer-in-the-headlights look mastered more than Burnett ever did.
