Re-signing Sabbathia another contract blunder?

1B Mark Teixiera and 3B Kevin Youkilis join Curtis Granderson as the latest Yankees who came off the DL and soon after went right back on.

Mark Teixiera was placed on the 15 DL for inflammation. How soon his body responds is anyone's guess. You'll excuse me if I don't hold my breathe.

Kevin Youkilis will be out for far longer. He will need season-ending surgery. Good 12M return?

That had me wondering with Tex, A-Rod on the books for the next few seasons...will CC Sabbathia be the next contract to bite Cashman in the butt?

Maybe the move was to sign and trade CC for 2 young prospects and/or pitchers? While its difficult to say, the amount on money on the Yanks books PLUS Robinson Cano's impending free agency scares me. The Yanks have ZERO offense outside of Cano.

Does anyone know what's going on upstairs in the gates of the Yankee front office?

If the Yankees were the type to be willing to trade Sabbathia for high end prospects they'd have already done so for Granderson who everyone and their mom know that they aren't bringing back.

I would expect them to give him an extension and that he'll be another $20 million lamp post within a few seasons.

Can't tell if its Cashman or the ownership that is pushing for this "forever in limbo" mode.

The Yankees need to rebuild. They don't have any elite franchise level talents in the minors...with other teams willing to spend AND also spending early to lock up their own top franchise level talents...even if they do start opening up the pocket books, there just aren't going to be any real elite guys that will be available to even thrown money at...unless/until they are in the 33-34th years.

^ Yup, spot on. Exactly why Cash-man should be working the phones to move Cano NOW. I'd have to think there is a team out there willing to give us more than the equivalant of two DP's for Granderson too. The overhaul and rebuild needed to start two winters ago and the FO has failed. Unfortunately, I don't expect anything to change.

Puig got 6/42

Chapman got 5/25

Cespedes got 4/36

We could have landed these 3 MLB ready phenoms, and could've had all of the makings of an elite young team.

Youk is 34 and got 12 Million.

We could've dumped Granderson/CC/Ichiro... Never signed Youk. This organization is terrible. There a brand, not a franchise anymore.

Imagine a lineup of:

Gardner
Jeter
Puig
Cano
Cespedes
Teix
A-Rod/Nunez
Montero/Cervelli
Hafner/Brignac

I'm salivating out the mouth..... Instead we over-paid for over the hill bums who don't show heart when they're on the field.

Right, let's just win all the bidding wars for EVERY cuban free agent that came out. That's certainly realistic.

Let's be real here, where we pick each and every year, the odds of getting high end MVP caliber talent is doubtful, which is why we need to target these IFA. Not until recently has there been any restrictions and we missed out on taking some opportunities. It seems we were gun shy due to the great Kei Igawa bidding, which was an impulse buy based on the loss of Daisuke.

Ever since that time, we have been buying marginal talent in lieu of the big ticket, hoping we would strike gold. It happened with Wang and Cano but that's about it, most of our high-end IFA talent came with a high price tag.

I am bias against Japanese players coming into the MLB. Ichiro/Matsui were the only players to really pan out. However, Cuban players have been proven to be successful. And for a team depleted on young talent, a wise organization with money like ourselves should have been able to lock these guys up.

I posted it in the quote on accident. On phone.

I don't think the expectation is that the Yanks would win every bid. It was that they would win at least a couple...or even just one. But they've low balled every bid recently.

Hard to tell if its because Cashman wasn't allowed to spend money or if he was so afraid after bids won for guys like Igawa and Irabu and that big Cuban pitching bust.

If it was the later reason then it honestly points to stereotyping...and shame on him.

cashman is a terrible GM

missed on cespedes, puig, chapman, darvish...all who cost just $$ no picks no players no nothing

All I've heard were the killer B's coming up years ago. What the hell happened? Is Brackman even in the farm anymore? Banuelous got injured, and hasn't been the same, and Betences has become an average prospect.

Montero still hasn't done anything in Seattle.
Romine regressed.

This farm sucks.

To me, that's the key. The Farm really hasn't developed much quality starting pitching, forcing Yanks to pay top dollar for Pavano, Burnett, Igawa, etc. I don't know how you can be a winning organization that is "fiscally responsible" if you can't draft.
