The real brains behind The Yankees Dynasty: Don Zimmer
I think I speak for many Yankees fans when I say Don Zimmer was really the Heart and Soul of the last Yankees Dynasty and was really The Brains that made Joe Torre look so good. Joe Torre wasn't called "Clueless Joe" for nothing before joining The Yankees. He was known as a horrible manager that couldn't win jack. Zimmer had guts and knew the players more then anybody. This season Torre has been exposed tremendously, why? Because he has a bench coach that has no experiences as being a manager in the past. I know Garadi was the bench coach 2 seasons ago and also had no experiences managing but Garadi is a very smart man. Im not saying Donny's dumb, he probably isn't cut in for the job he has now. He was good as a hitting coach, but I don't know what to say about his job as bench coach. I mean damn, somebody should tell Joe Torre how stupid the decisions he's making are. Joe Torre is just proving the point I'm making right now, Zimmer was the real brains when he was here. And all you guys that keep bashing Me and Pete about this are eventually feeling more dumb by the day because obviously Torre just keeps proving our point. But it's all good though, this is just part of the job we do. Im sure other writers on other sites don't take the crap you guys give us. That's what makes us different. Point is Zimmer just HAD to be the brains, Torre looks like a DAMN IDIOT right now.

Hm. I wouldn't call that a good read. Torre's dumb but that don't mean Zimmer was the reason we won. We won because we had pitching that was so good that it could be mismanaged and still produce.

What is this world coming to when a Red Sox fan is injecting reason upon us Yankee fans?

I agree with you 110%. Gene Michael was the brains behind the dynasty.

Wasn't Michael the one that expanded the Yankees international scouting department into one of the best in the business; one that was to become the model of most major league teams? I remember reading about how he was one of the first GMs to seriously mine the Latin American countries for future talent, going as far as to open training facilities down there. That's him, right?

Geez man. Take off the pinstriped glasses and realized that this team is flawed ans so is the manager! Look, you can't even defend the case that Torre is dumb, all you can do is attack my blatant usage of slang. I didn't know i was required to type my posts in MLA format.

Look you can't call Torre dumb. The guy brought us 4 world championships and all anyone did was praise him. Because everyone in our bullpen sucks this year and our starting rotation is decimated you guys are all knocking him. Does he deserve to go? I don't know. What I do know is if your relievers cant come through, you're not going to win. It doesn't matter who he brings in, they seem to all suck.

Dude the pen may suck because he brings the guys wrong in the complete wrong situations. He's thinking too damn hard this year because he's tryin so hard to keep his job.

Yeah we won 4 titles with him, but we should have won in 97 and 01 and 03 and have had the best team in baseball the past 11 years, but only 4 WS and 5 appearances. Something isn't right with that. I don't want you to say that teams would kill to have that success but we are the Yankees. We have the best players and the highest payroll. I'm not saying it's all Torre's fault, but he has been pretty dumb with the PEN and with his pinch hitting/running rotations this year. He pinch runs in 5th inning its just dumb.

Tues...Cabrera ran for Phelps in the seventh, to save Damon from playing the outfield (Dougie Fresh entered for Damon
4/23: no pinch runners
4/22: Cairo ran for Posada in the 8th
4/21: no pinch runners
4/20: Thompson ran for Giambi in the 8th (we had a 4 run lead at the time by the way) Torre STOP GOING TO RIVERA!!!! right!?!?!
4/19: no pinch runners
4/18: no pinch runners
4/17: Nieves popped up for Posada...dumb move we were winning 10-3 we should have won 14-3 huh
4/15: Rivera Blown Save. Dammit Torre when are you gonna learn not to trust the best closer EVER in the 9th
4/14: We won 4-3 4 2/3 IP from the bullpen, 2 Hits allowed, no one was complaining then
4/13: Thompson ran for Giambi in the 8th, damnit when will Torre realize Giambi is a speedster; Farnsworth blew that game though
4/11: Torre has to find a way to piece together 7 innings of his bullpen BECAUSE MOOSE GOT HURT!!!
4/10: Pettitte goes 6 strong throwing 96 pitches, we win 10-1. Thompson ran for Giambi in the 8th :o Oh No!!! Thompson comes up again and gets an RBI hit
4/9: Torre yanks Pavano after 7 innings, only 79 pitches. Ya know what??? he shouldve left him out there, especially since Pavano didn't make his next start and is still on the DL :banghead:
4/8: Rasner starts because we dont have another option, bullpen goes 5 2/3 and doesn't let up an unearned run.
4/7: 4 innings from the bullpen, no runs. Cairo hit for Matsui in the 4th because of Matsui's hammy. Damnit Torre let Matsui play on that hammy.
4/6: 5 innings from the bullpen, no runs
4/4: Pettitte on a pitch count  leaves after 4. Damnit Torre its your fault Pettite hurt his back and were keeping him cautious in April. Screw it keep him on the pitch count in October.
4/2: No earned from the bullpen in 4 2/3.

Look the reason our bullpen is doing crappy right now is because they were overworked the first couple weeks. Maybe, yet they had to be. Our starters are so banged up. Give Torre a healthy team and a healthy starting rotation and he will be able to better manage a bullpen. Get a clue dude.

Brains may not be the right word. Fire may be more appropriate. And if anything, that's what this team lacks and has lacked for several years. They don't have anyone on that bench that really can get guys fired up and enthused or lessen the tension by a bit of levity. I'm imagining that the Yankees are wound tight like a cord right now and there's really no one that is known for easing things. The Yankees seem to operate at one speed most of the time which, if not for the sheer talent they have would have resulted more likley in 90 loss seasons than 90 win seasons. And it comes from the time IMHO. Looking at Torre nowadays (when the TV camera zooms in on him), it's just so darn depressing. And Mattingly and his poker face doesn't exactly help change that any. Honestly, having two guys (Mattingly and Guidry) that really doesn't have any real experience on the bench from a coaching standpoint doesn't strike me as a smart move. Sure it's great PR having two former Yankee greats on the bench supposedly being "groomed" it very well could be that they aren't coaching material. Funny that their best coach is the guy with the least ML experience.
