Cano: Lowell threw an elbow

BOSTON -- Less than two weeks ago, Dustin Pedroia accused Alex Rodriguez of a cheap shot.

Now the elbows and words are flying in opposite directions.

After being upended by Boston's Mike Lowell yesterday on a fourth-inning double play, Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano said Lowell's actions were "of course" worse than Rodriguez's.

"I don't think it's a fair play," Cano said. "They made a big deal of what A-Rod did the other day. He didn't throw an elbow.

"Of course (this was worse). He stopped and he threw an elbow."

Cano had fielded a roller from Jason Varitek closer to first base than second. So he stopped to tag Lowell. And despite being flipped, Cano was able to complete the double play.

"He threw an elbow at me but I didn't say anything to him," Cano said.

Yankees manager Joe Torre was less critical.

"You're in the (base)line, you're fair game," Torre said. "It was hard baseball. There was nothing dirty."

Pedroia, the Boston second baseman, said Rodriguez threw an elbow at him while breaking up a double play on May 22.

thanks for the support Joe. Now imo it was BUSH. Your caught in a rundown and you extend your hands to tackle the 2B ? where have we seen that ?, but it's nice to see FOXSNESN stick up for another guy, had that been Alex Rodriguez well we all know what would follow.

Not really, I mean Keith always hates it when a player tries to avoid the tag or runs gently and waits till he gets called out when back in his days if you didn't tackle the player to the ground or make a hard slide you'd get benched.

It looks dirty, but it's not like Lowell ran a different route. He was in the line and just ran into him.

I remember when Minky was a Met he avoided a DP by running towards Richie Weeks and then going on the floor and rolling towards Weeks just to trip him.

Am I a fan of it??? Sometimes, that's why I liked Wigginton and would welcome him back on the Mets because he'd tackle a catcher to the ground. I hate it because last year Reyes almost ended the season when trying to tackle into Jason Varitek.

when you do it to a catcher he has equipment, BNO imagine if Barry Bonds were to tackle Jose Reyes in a rundown is that acceptable ?

Yes ... because it's how the game of baseball is supposed to be played. Now it's a friendly game. Would I be pissed, of course.

He stood there. Braced himself like a catcher. Then as soon as Cano got there, he basically flung him over. That is true Bush league. Slapping the ball, trash talking, throwing behind a guy etc. is part of the game. If Lowell wants to do that, he should be playing football not baseball. -Jitpal

exactly I don't want to hear any sh** if Alex runs through a 2B or SS trying to tackle him in a rundown if this allowed.

Lowell's play was BUSH LEAGUE no if or ands about it, Mike & Mike, Steve Philips, Krok's FATASS better criticize this crap.

Lowell just got the yankees back for Arods bush league play on Pedroia.

and what is Cano talking about? Arod threw an elbow right into Pedroia;s gut.

Lowell stopped and tackled him, Cano ain't a catcher. I don't see how that was a clean play.

I never said it was a clean play...

i guess he was getting the Yankees back for something.

I give Robi so much credit it take balls to speak out in pinstripes

if anything I atleast know three things

Robi was not a fan of that play

Robi has Alex Rodrguez's back

Joe Torre is not defending his team

im getting sick of Torre throwin yankee players under the bus

and the thing about the lowell play: he stopped, now if he was continuing to run towards 2nd base and did it, then Id understand, he just like stopped, and like tried to take him out like a blocker in the NFL.....he needs to get plunked next time we see him

and you can see his elbow in front of his body after the contact, clearly that was on purpose and a dirty play...he needs to get plunked the next time we see him

Cano is in the basepath, what is cheap about it? Clean, maybe not so much. But the rule you're taught is if someone is in the basepath, you have the legal right to knock them over, they are impeding your progress. If you go out of the basepath, that is another story, that is just being a dick. You get in the way, you have to be ready to get tagged. Cano could have stood a step out of the basepath, reached out to tag Lowell, and then make the flip to first. It happens every day in baseball. If Lowell tries to avoid the tag, he's out of the basepaths and he's out.

If that was Esteban German and we were playing the Royals, it never would have happened. It was obvious retaliation for the plunkings on Friday. But Lowell did it WITHIN THE RULES. This is what is wrong with baseball. People piss and moan about people doing things that upset other, A-Rod's "Mine", for example. That happens all the time, so many guys have come out recently and said it happens constantly. But it was a huge deal because it was A-Rod and everyone thinks he's a jerk. If you can get a leg up doing something that might not be entirely clean but is within the rule book, you do it. I'm sorry if I object to the pansification of my favorite sport. mahalo
