Bud Selig told Jason Giambi that he better cooperate with former Sen. George Mitchell's investigation of steroid use or else. The else might be coming.
A high-ranking MLB official who had spoken to Selig told USA Today on Wednesday that the commissioner is leaning toward suspending the New York Yankees slugger. The official was not given permission to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, the paper said.
In the May 18 edition of USA Today, Giambi all but admitted he took performance-enhancing drugs.
"I was wrong for doing that stuff," he said. "What we should have done a long time ago was stand up -- players, ownership, everybody -- and said: 'We made a mistake.' Steroids and all of that was a part of history."
After the comments, Selig offered Giambi a deal: Talk to Mitchell and "cooperate fully" or you will face disciplinary action. The players union, the commissioner's office and Giambi's representatives have been bargaining since. Giambi is on the disabled list with a foot injury.
"Any admission regarding the use of illegal performance-enhancing substances, no matter how casual, must be taken seriously," Selig said at the beginning of the month. "It is in the best interests of baseball for everyone, including players, to cooperate with Senator Mitchell in his investigation.
"Discipline for wrongdoing is important, but it is also important to create an environment so players can feel free to honestly and completely cooperate with this important investigation."

BS....Selig is trying to cover his own arse for this whole thing. He should have instituted a testing program like other sports earlier than he did. Problem was, he needed an attendance boost after the strike and Mcgwire and Sosa were the perfect way to do it. Whether we like it or not, they saved baseball. You can say what you want about Ripken's streak, but it was Mac and Sammy that brought EVERYONE back. Selig and anyone with half a brain around baseball knew the players were juicing. It's a disgrace and I don't think anyone would be upset if Selig was gone after this year.

I posted this on the Knick board but I figure I'll post it here as it makes more sense here.

First this should be on the Yankee board but anyways. MLB has no ground to stand on and I think it is all a scare tactic to get someone talking to George Mitchell. So if he does suspend Giambi, the players union will argue and that will be the end of that. Let's just say by some weird accident that the suspension sticks, the suspension will not begin until Giambi comes back and is healthy. So he would be done for the year or potentially for a good portion of the year next year if Giambi does not return this year.
The Yankees will not void Giambi's deal. It makes no sense to, if they were going to get rid of him, they would have when he had that worm or whatever it was. With one year left on his deal, they wouldn't be saving much because they would probably sink too much time and money recovering the money they paid him. Also it would scare away potential free agents, money or not. It would look like the Yankees would not hesitate to throw them under the bus if they were not performing. Not going to happen. Giambi with a very reduced role, I can see that, but they will not release him or get out of his contract. At least not publicly. -Jitpal

I believe he is going to be out of the cast in August. However, there will probably be like 3-6 weeks of rehab. Meaning he could be back mid-September or perhaps miss the season entirely. -Jitpal
