WIRETAP: Trading Teams Target Yankee Pitching Prospects

Post#1 » by Slamm Goodbody » Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:46 pm

New York Daily News - Members of the White Sox whose contracts are expiring and who therefore may be available as the trade deadline approaches are Mark Buerhle, Paul Konerko and Jose Contreras. Yankees GM Brian Cashman could have interest in acquiring one of these players to help his struggling Yankees team down the stretch.

The Rangers' first baseman Mark Teixeira has also been mentioned often as the subject of trade rumors.

Teams trading with New York will target the Yankees' young arms including Phil Hughes but Cashman will be reluctant to part with his best pitching potential.

In discussions about Buerhle, the White Sox have brought up Huhges and minor league pitching prospects Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy.

I bring up this article more to frame a question on the issue of our team's long term development than to point at a link on the wiretap.

Hypothetically, would you a) rather see us make the playoffs but pull off a trade with some of these young arms, or b) take this season as a development year and prep the kids for next season? Obviously, we still have a chance to make the playoffs without a trade and a chance to miss the playoffs if we make one, but I'm curious to see if we're primarily a win now every year club at whatever the cost or one that is willing to take it's lumps for a season before a return to prominence with more seasoned young talent (ala Boston last season).

There are some names on that list that intrigue me, but guys like Buerhle (who we really don't need, as much as I like his game) and Tex are going to demand a lot more money next season; is a rental worth it? Better yet, is a rental going to get us a ring this year? Considering that the spiral of trading our farm for vets has kept our wheels spinning the last few years, I'm inclined to say we should stick to our guns and try to trade only our lower level or less highly touted prospects on guys that teams look over (possibly like a Dmitri Young), but I'd like to see these kids come up for a little while and develop from within.

no we're not trading our pitching prospects like Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes and Jose Tabata isn't going either.

I wouldn't be too upset if either Kennedy or Horne were dealt, but not for a pitcher like Buehrle. I'd do it for a bat such as Tex, but that's about it. Let them take Kennedy and Duncan, or Horne and Duncan, some type of package like that. Hughes, Joba, Betances, Tabata remain here.

I think the reality is teams will simply not be looking to trade "meat and potato" players until the trade deadline gets near.

And even then mortgaging the future for a quick fix is just not sound strategy.

They'd be better off to look at guys that might be able to come in and give them a charge for the short run than another big name that will cost them a fortune (both in terms of players dealt and contract gained).

The big name guys can be had during the offseason when it's only contract and not players we are talking about.

Some guys that would be more realistic that could help give them a jolt to the lineup without costing an arm and a leg in terms of talent in return include:

Ken Griffey Jr - 37 years old but still a feared hitter that could give them a hell of a 1-2 threat with ARod, can play RF or DH and finally allow the Yankees to give up on Abreu.

Dimitri Young - the beer-bellied, do-rag wearing power hitter that is currently hitting .338 for the Nationals and who bring the type of firey personality that this team really seems to lack.

Frank Thomas - age, injuries and (likely) steroids have taken it's toll but he's still a hitter that brings a lot of clout when he's up at the plate and that opposing pitchers have to be careful with.

a 24 year old clemens, pedro, and Greg maddux could not save the yankees at this point. We pitch well and then we can't hit 3rd rate picthers, we hit well and we can't get out scrub ass hitters. Pettite is having to pitch no hitters just to keep the team within 1 run. Wang has to be great every game, and mussina is a 6 inning 5 run type pitcher. we have a team that can't perform on the same page and our bull pen is a nightmare at times...

Keep the farm in tact, keep A-rod cano, jeter, mo, posada, melky, wang, petitie and fire sale the rest of this shipwreck.....
