My take on Edwar Ramirez

Not sure if any of you guys have heard of him or not. He's a 26 year old rookie reliever on the Yankees. They signed him last year out of an independent league after he was released by the Angels. Apparantly they used strictly stats to find someone to fill out their A league roster. Funny, because stats are one of the reasons I love this kid so much.
Last year in A ball he was 4-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 3 saves in 30.2 IP. But that's not the story. The story is that in those 30+ innings pitched, he had 47 K's and only 6 Walks. thats a 7.8 K/BB ratio, and 13.8 K's/9 IP.
It doesn't end there. This season he only got better. Between AA and AAA he went 3-0 with a 0.62 ERA and 4 saves in 43.1 IP. He struck out 79 and walked 18. HIS K/BB ratio wasn't as good as last year, at 4.4. But his K's/9 IP jumped to 16.4
It gets even better, in his major league debut he struck out Joe Mauer (Reigning AL Batting Champion), struck out Michael Cuddyer, and struck out Justin Morneau (Reigning AL MVP) to end the game.
His next outting he didn't fair as well. He walked one, struck out 1, and let up 1 Earned Run. But he did pick up his first Major League win.
Of course. Joe Torre won't let him pitch and he continues to bring in Kyle Farnsworthless to blow games instead of letting this guy get a chance to prove himself.

Joe is so predictable. Who didn't see this coming? Ramirez had one "bad" outing and he was banished from Joe's pecking order. This is why Joe needs to be gone at the end of the year, his bullpen management is atrocius.

Joe has always been terrible at managing the pen and always will be. Vizcaino seems to have gotten his stuff back so what does Joe do? He puts him in 4 times in 5 days. I think twice it has been for multiple innings. The reason he was so terrible from mid-april to the all-star break was because he was overused for 2 weeks pitching nearly every day. Now that Vizcaino is pitching well again, Torre is using him everyday again, meaning later in the year, he is going to be terrible again. -Jitpal

This wasn't a thread to bash Torre, what do you guys think of Ramirez? There is no doubt in my mind he can be a valuable contributor/.

If Torre was going to do this to the kid, then he'd be better served in AAA where he can pitch on a normal schedule of 3-4 times a week. His refusal to use young players and (more importantly) the way he mismanages a bullpen is what keeps him from being a good manager. Imagine Torre doing what Yost did with Braun? Calling up a rookie and after one game, solidifying him as your #3 hitter? Look at how that turned out for the Brewers. Sometimes you just have to take chances. If Ramirez can't handle the 7th or 8th inning then so what, nobody can get on Torre for trying it because he wouldn't be any worse than Farnsworth. Then you move on to a different option.
But not making changes and actually ACCEPTING failure from your 8th inning setup man is something that should not be allowed.

I like Ramirez but Torre is a guy that likes to stick to his guns on his vets when we absolutely need wins and not gamble on an unknown. I'm not defending him on this, but I know how he'll handle it because we've seen it with other relievers before.
Ramirez is still unproven, so Joe will put him in for a few garbage time appearances. After he proves his dependability by performing in no pressure situations, he'll ween him into the pen rotation. He's done the same thing in the past with Villone, Bruney, even Vizcaino after he started to suck it up. We've been winning a lot of close games lately so there hasn't been much of a chance for Edwar to prove he deserves a spot in the pen rotation, but once we're in a few blowouts (ideally with us up by 10 runs) you'll get a look at him.

I think torre is doing the right thing with this guy...
he has 1 out pitch. you cant throw him to the wolves night after night because sooner or later, hes going to get exposed. if you pick your spots with when you throw him out there in the fire, he can have much more success.

Sooner or later hes gonna be exposed? Look at his numbers in the minors....let him have at it my god

Well it is his 1st appearance in like 2-3 weeks
Yes it was awful but you cant expect a pitcher to be great after he hasnt pitched in a long time.
Remember Mo earlier in the season? We werent able to use him much and when he did pitch it wasnt very good at all.
If Ramirez is used more then he will do better imo.

its not his fault. torre doesn't use him in 2 weeks and expects him to be the same. torre's bullpen management is so horrible. instead of using Proctor is 6 run blowouts why not put in edwar?
