I'm not sure if it is anything more than insurance in case of an injury, it's always nice to have veterans available down the stretch in a pennant race.
There were also rumors of Joba being promoted to AAA to work out of the bullpen so that he can become the Yankees setup man for the final month or so of the season (and then trade Proctor to make room for Joba up here).

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that after Joba's next start in Trenton he'll be promoted to Scranton. They'll get him some innings there and then come September he will be in the bullpen in New York. Proctor or Farnsworth will be traded.
EDIT: whoops, NYKGM just said that.

I'm not sure if I buy it, though. It is done a lot with top pitching prospects so it isn't something I'm against, but the Yankees are more cautious than any other organization with prospects, none the less pitchers. It may be a good way to limit Joba's innings and help the bullpen, but it just doesn't seem like something that the Yankees would do. But on the other hand, it seems like more than just an ''idea'' at this point. Gammons reported it and there were other rumors about it, so we'll just have to wait and see.

how about we trade proctor for one of rangers' closers? the yanks get a quality setup man and the rangers get back a decent and cheap reliever for the pen.

I just dont see how we are going top get a reliever better than proctor. WIlliamson is a scrub and is just insurance. I never liked the idea of trading proctor. Joba is in AA right now and cant be expected to come up and be our setup man. The dudes a starter so we dont even know if he can transition into that role.

I think Williamson is decent. I don't want to trade Proctor either, but I wouldn't rule it out if we can get a really good player back.

yeah he did, but his scheduled start was postponed and he pitched the next day and most starters always get roughed up like that..

Didn't Joba smash the hitters in his previous 20 starts?
Obviously he isn't ''ready'' but there is no reason that he can't step into a bullpen and be dominant. His fastball/slider combination would be devastating for one inning, he isn't ready to START because his change and curve need more time.

I wouldn't mind that at all either, but there is no doubt in my mind that he would be nasty out of our bullpen right now.

Actually this would be a perfect way to limit Joba's innings, so I'm shocked you wouldn't call that babying. Also, Hughes doesn't have the stuff of a reliever so that never would've been possible for him last season.

Hughes could be an elite reliever but his stuff is too valuable as a starter. If you asked him who will be better as a starter, either Joba or Hughes, I would say Hughes and it's not even close.
