July 28, 2007 -- SAN FRANCISCO - For most of the last month, Barry Bonds has been tossing verbal bouquets toward Alex Rodriguez, but the praise stops at a point.
"Is he as good as me? Hell, no," Bonds told The Post when asked if Rodriguez was the best player of this generation. "He's better than me now because he's younger than me. But, hell no."
Bonds was later asked if Rodriguez ranks right behind him. "He ain't even second," he said. Bonds said that honor goes to his close friend, Ken Griffey Jr., "but he got hurt."
Bonds then considered whether Rodriguez ranks third on the list. He seemed to give Rodriguez the nod but then backed off a little.
"He's in the top three with me and Junior," he said. "But, you know, people forget Manny Ramirez. When he was at Cleveland I used to watch that boy all day long. I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe how he plays. Defensive-wise he wasn't always there."

I think Barry is better than ARod. Barry's just trying to be modest here.

Read it in the post this morning. I consider them somewhat credible.

Yeah Alex isn't in his league. Alex doesn't need juice to be good.

When Manny was in Cleveland, he was the best player in the AL, especially in 98,99.. Still not better than Bonds..
ARod is damn good though...
None of them, and I mean none of them can hold a candle to Jeter in October/November though... That's when it counts...

WOW Barry talks a lot of sh*t.... but he is a hella of a ball player... if any body can say that.. Bonds can cause he got the numbers to back him up, but inst this kind of hypocritical, wasn't during the all star break, he was praising A-Rod saying how he can break the HR record? and besides, Barry forgets one thing... Barry: Outfield, Junior: Outfield, Manny: Outfield. I would like to see Bulky Bonds try to play SS or 3B and still put up .300 avg. 45 HR. and 120 RBI's. He has to understand that SS and 3B is a much harder position and takes up more energy then the outfield positions. Can any 3B or SS in MLB put up the numbers that A-Rod are putting out??

As far as I know, A-Rod got to 500 cleanly. Bonds getting to 755 cleanly is laughable.

Ohhhhhhhh... Now that I read it again, I know what he is trying to say. I absolutely agree with Barry Bonds. Duhh.. Barry Bonds is in the National League and A-Rod is in the American League. Barry is right, A-Rod isn't in his league

Pretty much spot on except that A-Rod is better than Griffey.
Do people really forget just how unbelievably awesome Barry Bonds was at baseball? Throw away the last 6 years if you want, but he's probably the most talented player who has ever stepped on a diamond.
1992: .311/.456/.624, 34 HR, 39 SB
1993: .336/.458/.677, 46 HR, 29 SB
It's truly (Please Use More Appropriate Word) to have an 1.100 OPS with 50 SB potential. How many players in baseball history have a season with 50 steals, a season with 50 HR and a season with an OPS over 1.100? One.

And Bonds wasn't on steroids in the early nineties when he was the greatest athlete in the universe. Well, I guess he could have been, but so could anyone.

.
This does not sound like something that Bonds would say, or at least, say it in that way.
The thing is, though, it's true. Before A-rod can step up to Bonds level he's going to at least have to clearly be the very best player on his own team year after year. Hopefully A-Rod will get there one day but i don't even consider him a solid third, top ten? yes.
