Good year to get him some experience since it looks like the Yankees are beginning to falter again with back to back loses against the O's.

Hmm, a power arm whose fastball sits at 96-98 consistently, to go along with PLUS secondary pitches. What's not to like?

Think fastballs in the upper 90s, as high as 99 or 100 at times, combined with what would be considered one of the filthiest sliders in all of baseball right now. Oh, and he's also got that nice change and developing curve. For Joba it is all about commanding the change and curve, if he does he will be an ace (but our #2 thanks to Hughes :lol:

It's possible, but I wouldn't bet on it. This is a great opportunity for the Yankees to limit Joba's innings this season while helping the big league club at the same time...all while giving him valueable experience in a pennant race. He has only thrown 84 innings so far due to the hamstring injury before the season started, but I doubt the Yankees wanted him to get too far past the 130-140 range anyway. I could see him starting 2008 in AAA and limiting his innings for a month so that he can pitch without any limitations in the majors from May and beyond. I guess it really all depends on how many innings he throws out of the pen in the final 2 months.

I really like this. Hey ya never know, he could pull a Paplebon and be our next Hall of Fame closer. I'd rather see him as a starter, but if can excel as a closer why not?

According to Michael Kay on YES, the Yankees have moved Joba Chamberlain into the pen at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

If that's the case, it won't be long before they call him up. Now they could move Tyler Clippard back up to Triple-A. Clippard and Chase Wright were demoted to Double-A so that the Yankees could put Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy into the Triple-A rotation.

How is clippard doing lately? With all the attention going to hughes and chamberlain, clippard has become the forgotten man. I though he was the second best pitching prospect at the beginning of the season.

He has been absolutely horrendous, he seems like he lost all of his confidence after his stint up here. He was actually demoted back to AA when Joba and Kennedy got the call to AAA. Hopefully he straightens out and comes back solid next year, because he certainly has a future in the majors.

He is too good. He led the entire minor leagues with a K/9 rate of nearly 14 as a starter, and usually going from the rotation to the pen increases guys K rates. I figured that would be hard for Joba to do because of his ungodly K rates as it is. Instead, he now has a K/9 rate of 21 out of the pen. :lol:

Look at the pitch by pitch, you can even imagine him yawning his way through the inning...

Batter 1: Ball - Called strike - Swinging strike - Ball - Ball - Called strike
Batter 2: Called strike - Called strike - Foul - Swinging strike (slider in the dirt)
Batter 3: Swinging strike - Called strike - Swinging strike

Duke Castiglione just mentioned that Joba came into a game with Scranton in the 7th inning and was clocked at 100mph 4 times!!!

Joba Chamberlain just made his bullpen debut here in Rochester.

He came in to pitch the seventh inning and struck out the side. He hit 100 mph twice on both the stadium radar and the Yankees gun. He hit 99 at least three times maybe more, depending on the actual speeds of pitches that didn't register on the stadium gun. (I'm pretty sure he never threw a fastball 37 mph in his life).

Chamberlain threw 13 pitches, 10 of them for strikes. All three balls came to the first batter he faced.

Gil Velazquez struck out looking at a slider, a pitch that was setup by a 99 mph fastball.

Denard Span took two straight 99 mph strikes, then fouled off a pitch and finally struck out swinging at a breaking ball in the dirt. Looked like a curveball to me.

Matt Tolbert struck out on three straight fastballs, the fastest of which hit 97.

Chamberlain is scheduled to take a day off Tuesday, then pitch another inning Wednesday.
