Joba Chamberlain has been summoned to the major leagues and is scheduled to pitch in relief of Roger Clemens Tuesday night as the New York Yankees visit the Toronto Blue Jays.

Former Nebraska pitcher Joba Chamberlain has been called up from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to play for the New York Yankees.
Chamberlain, a 21-year-old former Nebraska All-American, received word of the promotion Monday, according to his father, Harlan Chamberlain, and immediately flew from Scranton, Pa., to Toronto.

The Yankees have not officially announced the move.

"To be happening this quick, it's just a dream," the elder Chamberlain said. "It's a dream that was always there, but to achieve it this quick, it's unbelievable. It's surreal.

Buster Olney says Jeff Karstens is the likely choice to get the boot.

So tomorrow we will essentially be trading Cairo and Karstens for Giambi and Joba. Sweet deal

Is it going to be Cairo that goes or will it be Duncan? Duncan has minor league options I could see us sending him down until the rosters expand.

So they are already planning on bringing him in relief tonight? I don't like that. I think the game dictates who you bring in and when. I don't like when there are set plans for relief pitchers at all, thats what the minors are for. That being said, I'll be focused when he gets in there for the first time.

It's possible, but I see no point in sending Duncan down when he has been tremendous on the field and in the clubhouse. DFA Cairo or put him on the DL until September 1st.

Right put a guy on the DL who isn't hurt, because that will work out well. Everyone knows Shelley will be sent down. He did what he was asked, will be called back up on midnight September 1st, or when someone gets hurt. Just have to face it.

Cairo has been banged up, which is why we have seen less and less of him. Sending Duncan down for a month would be completely foolish, we're better off DFAing Cairo even if it means someobdy else takes him.

Why, exactly? I understand that Cairo's expendable now that we have Betemit but losing him via DFA doesn't make sense to me when we can put Duncan back in the minors for a couple of weeks with zero risk.

I like Duncan, I love the energy he brings to the team and everything, but we have a full time DH already in Giambi (and a part time one in Damon). Can we afford to spend a roster spot on another guy that can't play the field? He's not going to get substantial playing time until the rosters expand with all the guys we have coming off the DL, and he's not going to pinch hit for anyone in our lineup, so what's his role? Matchups? I'd rather he get the at-bats in AAA for now, but that's just me.

Why would we send Duncan down, a guy who has helped the team and has become the right handed pinch hitter in favor of Cairo. Cairo isn't even the utility guy anymore, he is the BACKUP utility guy. He has no role on this team. Suddenly we're going to hurt the team by sending down Duncan just for 3 weeks just to save a BACKUP utility guy?

Duncan doesn't need to get at bats in AAA, he isn't a top prospect who has to play everyday. He is a right handed slugger. Like you said, his role is matchups. If Giambi gets a day off against a tough lefty, Duncan will DH. That alone is a hell of a lot more than we will be using Cairo for. We're going into the biggest stretch of the season where we play Cleveland 3 times, Detroit 8 times, the Angels 3 times, and the Red Sox 3 times. Please don't even try to tell me that Cairo can provide more than Duncan when we need it most.

Who cares if Cairo gets cut??? He's useless, we could find many guys like him on the waiver wire.
