Jorge Posada: The Forgotten Season

I posted this verbatim in the GB, but I figured you guys that don't venture there would appreciate it as well.

Imagine a season in which a player can put up a stat line of .338/.424/.558, 20 HR, 85 RBI, 38 2B, 10.1 WARP3, .340 EqA at catcher and not only is he not the best player in the league, but not even the best player on his own team?

Welcome to Jorge Posada

Where is Jason Varitek in all of this? I think we need a recount.

BBJ, you might want to consider posting only the link to the post in the General board here, instead of the whole post; should help to keep the discussion in one place.

Varitek, surprisingly enough, would rank near the bottom in most categories.

Eh, I think it's relevant in both places. And yes, most of us on this board are aware of how good a season he's having, but it's nice to see it in a historical perspective.

...not the mention the fact that he's a catcher doing this at age 36. Yeesh. Baseball Prospectus put up an article today suggesting the Yankees might better spend their last week resting players instead of trying to catch Boston for the division. It might be worth it to keep Jorge and his bat fresh for the playoffs.

Sure it is; I just think it makes little sense to split up the discussion. Now you have a few replies here, and a few on the general board...

But yeah, whatever.

I knew he was having a great season but I didn't realize how good until I saw this. Good stuff.

It's a fine line, between resting a guy for his good or for harm. If he sits out, he may cool off. You really don't want that at all. It would hurt for his bat to cool off more than his fatigue. The thing is, we are right there for the division, if we were 5-6 out then it would make more sense but 2 1/2 back isn't a lot. Getting to select the playoff format is huge, it could mean the difference in how many appearances Joba can have and potentially even moving us into a 3-man rotation for the ALCS, depending on how it is formatted and such. I'm not saying we shouldn't get Molina in more, he doesn't hurt behind the plate and it could be argued that he is better behind the plate and let Posada DH a few. Give Matsui a little extra time off. I think we should do that if we fall back to 4 games out, which is very possible over the course of 1 or 2 games. -Jitpal

How so? He's been even more consistent than ARod all year.
