Someone on another board actually went through his at-bats and figured out his good season is almost entirely a product of left field in Fenway--hence the giant divide in his home-road splits. All of the balls that he hits off the Green Monster would turn into flyball outs in Yankee stadium. He'd be another Damon-esque mistake... except possibly even worse.
As for Bonds, you can ride your high horse all you want (God knows you're not getting off of one so tall), but he might still be the best hitter in the league if he got enough at-bats. If not for all the redundant DH-types on the team already, i'd love to have him.
The concerns with Lowell are certainly justified. I respect him as a player, as a defender, and as a Yankee farmhand, but I'm not positive he'd provide that #4 power we need from the corner infield spot. In this case, the best route for filling a hole left by A-Rod may be to look at bringing in a power 1B and going with defense and a little pop at 3B, which is what Lowell would bring. I'd love to see the post from the other board where they went through his at-bats because it sounds very interesting (and very well could turn my opinion).
Jitpal, as far as Betemit, I'm not sold on him in the slightest. As a utility guy he's fine, but I wouldn't want to start him daily at 3B just because of his tendency to swing at everything thrown anywhere near near him.
As far as Bonds goes, he can't stand the rigors of a full season anymore. His body won't allow him to be even a full-time DH. Even though he didn't go on the DL, how many games did he have to rest this year? Even if Bonds isn't playing the field, Giambi proved that being a full-time DH can still yield injuries. These aging ex-roided sluggers are breaking down, and I don't feel like watching a shell of one who was once the greatest hitter I've ever seen whine in the NY media about the twilight of his career. ESPN already has a conniption every time the guy takes a piss, I can only cringe thinking about what they'd cook up with him in pinstripes.
Bonds can still help another team, but we really don't need him. I'd rather have someone younger and more reliable - or, of course, extend A-Rod. We especially don't need the distraction - one even bigger than Giambi was. For the first time in a long, long time the team is gelling, everyone seems to be having fun, and there's no dour pricks that produce but that I hate rooting for on the team (i.e. Sheff, Randy Johnson, Kenny Lofton, etc.). Cashman has finally stopped the train of overpaid has-beens and is looking to the future, so let's not turn back the clock.
