Yankee Rumors: Mo, Posada, Rowand and Johan Santana

A source of mine with Yankee connections had some good info for me today. Much was discussed yesterday in Tampa.
For starters, the Yanks are expected to make "eye-popping" offers to retain Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera before the World Series ends. The team does not want the pair to file for free agency.
Additionally, the Yankees may make a big play for Aaron Rowand. They believe a package of Melky Cabrera, Chien-Ming Wang, and Ian Kennedy would entice the Twins for Johan Santana. That's a huge price, but doesn't seem out of line to me for the best pitcher in baseball.
My source didn't have anything about Andy Pettitte, who hated seeing Joe Torre go and will take a month to decide if he's even going to play next year.

I don't want Rowand. Melky, Wang and Kennedy is steep for Johan, I'd much rather deal Horne or Marquez or even both instead of Kennedy. Who didn't see huge offers for Posada and Mo coming? -Jitpal

MLBTradeRumors is pretty unreputable... i'll wait for Foxsports or somebody more reputable to report any Yankee interest in Rowand.

mlbtraderumors relies on reader submissions.
I don't include Kennedy in a deal for Santana.
I'd deal Wang, Melky & a couple of the middle of rotation young guys like Clippard. I'm not saying the Twins would accept the deal though.

(my post is hypothetical because this is mlbtraderumors we're talking about)
You wouldn't put in Kennedy when you're getting back the best pitcher in baseball? Not to mention we'd still have our two best young pitchers and a small stable of prospects to fill up the #4 and #5 spots in the rotation. You don't skimp when someone like Santana is involved.

Any trade that brings in Johan Santana and does NOT send Hughes or Joba the other way has to be considered, there is no other way to put it. Regardless, that is going to be a tough trade to make. We would have to give him an extension before any deal is completed otherwise it is not worth it, and I sense he wants to hit the market.

Yeah it's a lot, but if that's the only way you can get Santana, you have to do it.

I don't understand, why not just wait another year until he's a free agent? Is it really worth giving up 3 players: 1 how shown he has a huge impact and will continue to in the future, 1 who has been our ace for the last 2 years, and 1 who's going to be a major part of the rotation for years to come. I just don't see how it's worth it, honestly. If it were me, i'd just wait until the offseason and go after him hard and outbid anybody that gives him an offer. Give him a possible 7 year deal, starting at 20-21 mill. Even if we don't get him through free agency, there is a ton of ace potential guys that hit the free agent market next off-season including Lackey, Sabathia, Johan, Peavy, Sheets, Harden, Prior etc. etc.
Maybe that's just me though.

Because he's such a valuable commodity that odds are any deal involving him will be done by sign and trade. Let's say this again: he's the best pitcher in baseball. Decently-run teams won't sell the farm on somebody who won't be there in three months.

If that is the best trade offer the Yankees can mount, there have to be a handful of teams that will compete or beat that and the Red Sox are one of them. Wang is a huge piecem contrary to what most of you think Kennedy is probably #3 starter for his career, and Melky is a nice servicable player who hasn't developed a patient approach at the plate or power in his young career. He is a risk/reward guy. It all depends on how the Twinkies view him. If they think he can develop 20 HR power and draw more walks, that's a pretty good deal. If they think he is what he is, a lot of teams could trump that deal.
You know who could really surprise teams in terms of springing up and getting Santana? Colorado. They have a tremendous farm system so they could outbid anyone in terms of young talent, they have a solid young core to build around, and they are going to be swimming in money after making it to the World Series. The only thing that would worry me is the flyball tendencies of Santana up in Colorado. I haven't seen how the stats are playing out with the Humidor but for awhile any flyball was a possible HR at Coors. mahalo

If that's the price for Santana I say don't do it. If there was a way to keep Kennedy, maybe a package of Wang, Melky, Horne, Clippard/C level prospect...

Sorry but that package is good for santana. He is the best pitcher in baseball, kennedy is still an unproven and believe it or not, we keep our 2 best pitching prospects. Horne can be just as good, if not better then kennedy. I'm all for it but then again who says minnesota is

And can we stop pretending Tyler Clippard is a big trade asset at this point? The best thing we could possibly do with him is keep him and hope he turns it around again. His trade value is marginal.

I think Clippard has some value. He won't be the centerpiece of any deal but I'm sure some team would like to get him, especially one of those cheap ones. Clippard can be a solid 4 or 5 in the majors and he would be cheap for the next few years. Clippard as a second tier prospect in a deal is exactly what he is. -Jitpal

how did clippard fell off the cliff so fast? he was he second best pitching prospect behind hughes in spring training.

Clippard was probably the 2nd best pitcher in the minors, but he wasn't the 2nd best prospect.

I'd do Wang + Kennedy + Melky easily. We'll lose two pitchers from our potential starting staff next year but we'll get back a great pitcher in his prime.

I'd do that trade too. This team needs an ace, and it doesn't get any better than Johan Satana.
Johan Santana
Andy Pettite
Hughes
Joba
Mussina
that's pretty darn solid...with possibly Horne in the wings to replace the Moose if he struggles again.

I doubt it. And at their best, they won't be as good as Santana.
People need to realize that young pitchers don't always turn out the way we want them too... they have bumps in the road and often times don't live up to their potential.
Asking Hughes and Joba to anchor the front of the rotation as 21 year olds is asking too much.
