Breaking news: Arod will opt out!

DENVER -- Alex Rodriguez notified the Yankees on Sunday that he's opting out of his record $252 million contract, SI.com has learned.

Rodriguez's decision means he will become a free agent and be able to negotiate with all clubs. Rodriguez's bombshell move will shake up the entire winter for the Yankees -- who had hoped to retain him with a big extension -- as well as other big-market clubs that will now pursue him.

Rodriguez's agent Scott Boras said he sent word of the opt-out in writing Sunday and left phone and text messages for Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. The Yankees have said that once A-Rod opts out, they wil not pursue him, since they will lose the benefit of the Texas Rangers' $30-million subsidy.

"Alex made the decision today,'' Boras said. "I thought we should notify the club.''

See you later, Arod!

I can't even see Cash offering him even a lowball contract if this is the case. The Yankees will just let him go.

I guess he just didn't want to stay in New York. He's not getting more money than the Yankees would have given him.

I hope he winds up getting a lower contract then the yankees offered. His dick head agent thinks he's going to get 10 year 300 million. Hopefully he gets paid less then 25 mill a year.

Its tough to just lose someone of that caliber and get nothing back for him but we didnt win with him maybe it could be addition by subtraction.

Good Riddance. So much for not imagining playing in any place except NY. He is either going to go to a place like Texas where he will get the money and be the only guy there or he is going to come crawling back and take less than he was getting before. So who is our new big bat? -Jitpal

Somehow I think Boras has already talked to potential suitors already about a potential deal.. that's called tampering, but that hasn't stopped Boras before (see J.D. Drew).

this makes me sick to my stomach. f-ck Arod. If his only goal is to reach a world series, his best chances are to stay here regardless of the past seven years. How can e think he is being underpaid for what he does? he makes the most money in the sport and seems to need more? players like this make this game a disgrace, and its a spit in the face to all the great players of the past who played for pennies compared to what Arod gets paid now. this is a sad day for all of baseball. :nonono:

I can't believe I backed up this guy. It's always going to be about the money for him. He really had a chance to be one of the all-time greats, but now he's just going to be the MLB's best mercenary. If I'm the Yankees, I still might offer him a contract (lower than the one he would've gotten with the now lost Texas salary now) and say, "We aren't budging."

What have I said for a while? I've told you guys this since Day 1. You can never trust Alex Rodriguez. Ever.

I really hope we play an inter-league game with Cubs next year (A-Rod's likely destination) so everyone can boo the living hell out of Gay-Rod.

the yanks are smart here, without them in the bidding, no one is going to ante up the money he is looking for. Let him go somewhere else and put his playoff voodoo on some other team...
