UPDATE:

Girardi will sign a three-year contract worth approximately $7.5 million.

The Yankees officially offered their managerial job to Joe Girardi on Monday morning and he is expected to accept it, a source has told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Don Mattingly and Tony Pena that they will not be getting the job.

Girardi was in Denver for the World Series. A source said he is expected to fly to New York for the announcement, which is likely to come Tuesday. Girardi's contract is expected to be in the three-year, $6 million range.

This is a good hire as Joe Girardi is a proven success. I feel bad for Donnie Baseball, but I think this is the right move.

This is a very nice hire. As I said in the NY Knicks forum, give him #13.

I think its a great hire. I wanted someone that would chew a player out if he wasn't performing or hustling. someone with some balls. ala Lou Pinella. Girardi is a great hire. Eventhough hes stated otherwise in the past week, I believe Mattingly would have been redundant to Torre... Same laid back attitude... New York needs a manager with some fire...

p.s. I wouldnt be surprised if Hank And Girardi bring back memories of George and Billy. I'm sure one day down the line, theyre gonna get into it. ; )

I love Donnie but I don't feel bad for him. This job was setup for him to fail. It would be nice for him to join Joe's staff or at least stay on with the organization but it isn't likely and either way now isn't the time for a celebrity manager. This is going to be a hard job over the next year or two. Girardi has prepared for half his pro career for this moment not apprenticed for 3 or 4 years.

Posada is probably my favorite Yankee and I find it a positive to hear him say he isn't sure he would be comfortable with Girardi as his manager even it that means he isn't coming back. I think guys have gotten too comfortable, and the focus has been on getting guys comfortable. I don't remember Paul O'Neil talking about being comfortable. I remember a quite intensity and a will to win, that and guys who could get through a clean inning of relief.

Time to get back to 1998.

Paulie might come in as part of the coaching staff. Pena has already agreed to come back in some capacity.

Now just keep Bowa @ 3rd & we're good.

He said he couldn't make a decision yet for personal reasons. So Seattle has been holding off, waiting for him. My guess and what some people have speculated that the personal reasons were an excuse to see how the NY situation plays out. -Jitpal
