Rivera's agent, Fernando Cuza, said the Yankees have delivered an offer to Rivera, but he refused to say for how much. It is believed to be three years worth in the neighborhood of $40 million, a raise over his previous three-year deal worth $31.5 million.

Asked if he was optimistic that a deal could be reached by that date, Cuza said: "It really depends on them, and that's a question I can't answer. We just wanted to see what each side had to say.

A little steep if you ask me but whatever, he needs to be in pinstripes til he retires. Next up is Posada who for some reason I think will be a harder sell.

The price is a little steep, but who cares. As you said, he needs to be in Pinstripes until he retires. Mo's deal will look alot better when we dump over $70 million of bad contracts next offseason.

you gotta have mo, he could be the difference, why haggle over what is pennies to the yankees checkbook....

I would also invest some money in a big time set up guy, unless we feel a guy like sanchez is ready to step up. I am confident our young guys can give us 6-7 strong innings every outing..

I agree with the Mo stuff but I don't see how Sanchez could be ready. He is recovering from TJ, I think he just started throwing in August or something. Then he would have to convert from starter to reliever. I doubt he is ready or anywhere close to it. I'm not confident in 6-7 innings yet. In Hughes I am but not the other two. Chamberlain has never started in the majors and he will be on a strict pitch count to keep the innings down. Kennedy is the wild card, he may or may not. I really think we should invest in Cordero for setting up and maybe even Affeldt for long relief and spot starts. -Jitpal

great points.. I agree, cordero would be a great pickup..

This year is not the year to give up draft picks. The draft coming up is going to be one of the better ones, and I really wouldn't give up another pick for Cordero when he wants to close anyway. We get three picks with losing A-Rod (after arbitration), and Vizcaino. If we sign a FA outfield, go after Fukudome to save another pick.

It might be more than 3. Rumors are floating about the Mets looking to offer Posada 4/56-60 and that's too much. 2 more picks, making it 5 right? -Jitpal

wow, that is sweet. I would hate to lose posada tho. but if we can get production out of matui, abreu as they have done over the past few years, and a good year out of abreu and increased numbers from cano, that should be enough. especially with jeter and damon at the top of the lineup... and melky hitting late...

We'd need a stopgap catcher, cause we have Jesus Montero who's going to be nice in a few years, but he's still extremely young (like 18 or 19).

What about Cervilli, I think he is in AA. Any chance there? We could also look to sign Yorvit Torrealba for like a 3/21 or something. Not much of a hitter but he is pretty good behind the plate and pretty young as well. Torrealba and Molina would make for a good tandem behind the plate but we would need to upgrade the offense elsewhere. -Jitpal

While I don't want to invest a quarter of a billion dollars in ARod, this is not the time to get cheap about things. The best thing to do with both Mo and Jorge is to overpay on the annual and try and get an option or shorter deal. It doesn't matter what we pay them when they are great what you don't want to do is pay them for years when they are no longer able to play.

But this is a weak free agent market and there is a ton of money to spend. 14 mil annual is going to be the starting point for top flight position guys (we can thank the Red Sox for that). So 4 years and 56 mil is only the start of the conversation with Jorge.

As far as setting up for Mo. I think chasing closers is a mistake. If you need set up men go get a set up men. Linebrink or even Dan Wheeler who struggled a bit in Tampa but is a more than solid set up man.

in essence, id like to xtend Mo for 2 years, but if it takes 3 to get it done, then you add tat 3rd year

Scott Clark on ABC said that a deal is "imminent."
