HOUSTON (AP) -- Pitcher Andy Pettitte isn't ready to say whether he will exercise his option to play for the New York Yankees, but he's certain that if he doesn't play for them he won't play for anyone.

"The New York Yankees committed an awful lot of money to me and put it in my hands, gave me a player option and trusted me with that option," Pettitte said in a story posted on Houston television station KRIV's Web site. "It probably wouldn't be real honorable for me not to do anything other than if I shut it down, shut it down or go back and play for the New York Yankees."

Pettitte said he won't let the managerial changes for the Yankees figure into his decision.

"I gotta figure out in my mind exactly what I want to do," he said.

Pettitte said he is happy for Joe Girardi, who has been named manager. He said the other candidates for Joe Torre's replacement also would have been good choices.

Pettitte went 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA last season.

thanks man. I know the jets are struggling now, but mangini made a good point about character, having guys of good character. When things get tough, it is those with quality character that will perservere and get through the rough times... guys like pettite, jeter, posada, mo, bernie, tino, brosius were all great character guys, and that translated to the team and then on the field... A-rod on the other hand shows his character, and believe it or not, your teamates look at that, they lose trust in guys who display bad character and usualy don't rally around those types of guys.. I mean wasn't it odd that no one came to A-rods Aid when he was getting beat up in the media by boston players and NY writers? But how quickly guys like jeter and others came to the aid of Giambi, spoke up for the guy.. I think that says a lot... even when giambi was wrong for what he had done.....

Andy has said this all along but you have to imagine that Joe leaving upset him. At the same time I can't imagine that he would have a problem playing for Girardi.
