New Wrinkle in possible Santana deal

According to the wiretap a source familiar with the Twins would expect them to ask for Robinson Cano as part of the deal. While I am not 100% against dealing Cano my concern is that I know him alone won't be enough. They might still want Hughes/Chamberlain/Kennedy +someone else to make this deal. While I would love to get Santana I am starting to think that the price will be two steep. I would happily give up one of our big 3+ Cabrera and some other prospects but to have Cano as part of the package makes me say no. It would be nice to get Santana this deal would leave us with a major hole at second base along with a gaping hole at 3rd and a so-so 1st base situation.

With Arod leaving our infield is already depleted enough, we can't afford to trade Cano too. Pass.

Cano is our only young, established hitter. We can't afford to lose him at all. Especially when it will probably include Kennedy and Tabata or something of that sort.

very much sums it up .we just don't have the peaces to get him without giving up too much.
i think he is going to end up with the angles or the dodgers.

I have no interest in trading Cano. At all. For anybody. If they won't move off that demand, you just say goodbye.

I would trade Cano as part of a package for Santana before I would even think about giving up joba/hughes.
but thats just me, personally.

So, not only do we lose Arod's offensive production this offseason but we lose Cano's as well? I simply cannot pull the trigger on that move. Where does our offense come from? Do we rely on Matsui, Damon, & Giambi to have bounceback years? That is insane.
Cano was worth a ridiculous 11.8 WARP3 this past year. There was only one other person on the team worth more than that, and I bet you can guess who it was. For reference sake: Johan Santana was worth 9.4 WARP3.
We happen to have an abundance of pitching prospects, and almost no infield position prospects anywhere near the majors.
No go on Cano

We are left with a GAPING hole at 2nd both offensively & defensively if you trade Cano. Completely & totally insane.
I am not saying trade hughes or joba for Santana but I am completely & totally against trading Cano. He is too valuable to this team.

If you can get Santana by using Cano instead of Hughes, Chamberlain, and Kennedy, done and done. There is no such thing as a gaping hole at second base, it is second base.
I love Cano think he will likely win a batting title but so what? He isn't a 27 year old left handed power pitcher who throw to 230 innnings and wins 20 games.

Johan is going to be 29 by the time the season starts.
I just don't think should trade for Santana. He is going to be worth way too much. The Twins would be stupid to accept it for Cabrera and Kennedy, and anything more we offer would be too much IMO. I won't part with Joba, Hughes, or Cano. And i don't think they accept anything less then at least one of those 3 players.

I don't think you understand, it wouldn't be "Cano & Melky" it'd be "Cano, Melky & 1 of Hughes/Joba/Kennedy"
& quite honestly, if we could throw Kennedy at them without giving up Cano, you must do that deal. We have many pitching prospects, not many infield ones & NONE with the potential of Cano in PRESENT DAY let alone what Cano will eventually become.

Look I understand just fine. You nor I know what it will take to land Santana, what we do know is that Cano is the player that MINN wants to build the deal around.
They don't really want Cabrera he is not a special talent to them they are a player development machine. All of their position players are good defensively with big arms. They are looking for All Star caliber offensive talent Cano is that with salary control.
What will be interesting is were does Wang stand in reference to the young pitchers. It sounds like the Yankees put Wang on the table immediately.
I love Cano, I think he is a great ball player. But the reality is you can win the World Series without a great second basemen. But not only aren't we going to win one without a number one starter we may not be able to even make the postseason. The Yankees cannot sit back and let Santana land in Boston or LAA.
A package of Wang and Cano might have enough star power to allow them to avoid touching the top of the system. It seems like a lot to give up but if Hughes and Chamberlain are better than Wang, and I think they are then that is that. I haven't seen enough of Kennedy to know but he was impressive this season.

Wang on astroturf? Good luck.
Yes, I know they are building a new stadium with grass but by the time its opened, Wang will no longer be cost controled.
I simply do no see the Twins biting on a deal that doesn't include one of the "big 3". So, when you look at it like "Hughes/Joba/Kennedy & Cano" for Santana, it seems like a deal in which we give up too much.

Without factoring ARod into the situation which makes this a no brainer. Joba is not an option as far as I am concerned but Hughes and Kennedy have a long way to go to ever be Johan Santana. I love Cano but he can be replaced. While you cannot have too much pitching, Santana gives this team a chance to win the World Series over the next 5 years, I don't think you can say that with Hughes and Kennedy instead.
