Who exactly will the six man rotation be? I know the Sox are kicking around the idea as well. That looks like an alright rotation, especially with Joba and Phil's innings limits. I know Schilling and Wakefield will benefit from it next season, I'm sure Andy and Mussina will as well. mahalo

I'm guessing it will be Wang, Pettitte, Moose, Kennedy, Hughes, Joba. Or if they trade one, I assume Igawa could slot in as well. Obviously any major deal could change all of this. -Jitpal

Scratch this whole thread. Peter had a typo and meant to put a "not" in front of 6-man rotation. So 5-man rotation. -Jitpal

pettitte, hughes, wang, joba, kennedy, then the sixth could be moose/horne/igawa or whoever the hottest minor leaguer at the time is (which was the case when chase wright was called up)

You could edit the title and discuss the merits of a 6 man rotation. I think, with young and old pitchers (like both the Sox and Yankees have), for a season it makes some sense. It limits the young kids innings and allows everyone an extra side session between every start. That helps keep everyone strong and healthy. I think in 2009, they go back to a 5 man rotation but this coming season, it could make some sense. At some point, someone's going to get hurt and they will revert to a 5 man rotation again. I kind of like the idea. mahalo

Does Pettitte really need an extra days rest? Maybe yes, maybe no....but its better than throwing Igawa out there every 6th day......what are the possibilities of us keeping Pettitte and Wang on a regular scheduling, but juggling the young 3 and Moose.

An extra days rest allows you to have another side session between starts and this helps keep your arm strong throughout the season. Pettitte is getting older so any little thing that the Yankees can do to help keep him strong mid-season will benefit them in the long run.

The type of guy that stands to gain the least is Wang who is a "veteran" (meaning he's thrown 200 innings and isn't on a pitch count) and is still young that the extra rest isn't a tremendous benefit. But with Hughes and Joba on pitch count, not exactly sure what will happen with Kennedy (he's a young pitcher so who knows), and older guys like Moose/Pettitte, it might not be a bad idea. Those are a lot of the same reasons I like it for the Sox. Schilling and Wake are old, Buchholz is on an innings count, and Beckett threw more innings last year than he ever has. The Cleveland series showed that keeping your staff fresh is very important in the playoffs. mahalo

with the young guys in the rotation id go with a 6man rotation to start. u throw out Wang, Andy, Hughes, Joba, Moose, the kennedy. itll give the young guys that extra days rest, itll limit the usage on them so they dont burn out come sept/oct.

if we get a player like santana [looking unlikely] i dont see a 6man rotation happening cause hell wanan pitch every 5. slot in a haren/sheets/bedard type and a 6man rotation would work well as long as they dont move two of those young guys

6 man rotation would be pretty ideal if we somehow got sheets

The wildcard is Humberto Sanchez. Mussina is probably finished, even as #5 starter.

It's going to be Wang, Pettite, Hughes and Kennedy, with the 5th slot up in the air. It could be Sanchez, or Igawa, or Mussina. It could be Chamberlian if they move him out of the bullpen. Or it could be someone they acquire between now and next April.

i like Humberto Sanchez, i think hell pitch similar to CC. start of slow but get better and better. Not saying hell be CC but i think Sanchez can be a GREAT #3 in the yankees rotation. for years to come.

remember he was det third best prospect behind Cam Maybin and Andrew miller. before we nabbed him

Ummmm maybe you should use better examples. Carpenter got hurt again and missed almost all of last year, and since when has Leiber dominated?
