report have surfaced that the Twins have traded for Johan, pending a new contract being in place
So the yankees dont Trade away Hughes and Melky, but will miss out on the Best pitcher in baseball over the past 5 years.
The Mets help the Yankees keep him away from Boston. We wont have to face a Johan more then once a year so thats good news.

Who the Mets gave up compared to what was offered by the Yanks and redsucks. makes it evident the Twins would of rather trade Johan to the NL regardless of prospect value IMO
Who did the Mets give up? Guys who according to Peter Gammons wouldn't even show up in a ranking of the top 10 prospects of either the Yankees or Red Sox. But the Twins were stuck. Neither the Yankees or Red Sox were willing to budge on not dealing two of their top prospects Minnesota wouldn't budge on getting both of them. Knowing the Twins were using their presence as possible trade partners as leverage to get the other team to panic into giving up the 2 guys they both chose to back off serious negotiations. Having essentially driving off 2 of the few teams that could afford Santana's extention price they settled for lesser prospects from a team in another league.

I think the contract, the one that hasn't even been agreed to, ended up being huge sticking points for both Boston and New York. Because of Santana's no trade, the team acquiring him is backed into meeting his price to make the deal happen as opposed to making their best offer and seeing what the market would yield. It is one thing to bid against yourself, it is another to bid against yourself and give up two of your best prospects.

I think I'm as happy as some Mets fans are. Sure if we traded for him, I'd learn to live with acquiring the best pitcher in the game. But we keep a guy who we expect to be our future ace, our starting CF (although that may only last another year), and another good prospect as well as saving $20-25 million a year. All of that and we keep him out of Boston...and not just Boston, but the AL as a whole. This worked out as well as it could've for us.

Boston didn't get him, that's good enough for me.

Considering our payroll, I shouldn't be making this comment. But it would have cost us a lot of money to keep him. Sometimes you look back at the end of the day and realize, the best trades are the ones not made.
If Cashman wants to stick around he better hope our kids develop or we're in the playoffs or Johan ends up with a sub-par season. I'm hoping for the latter.

I think that part in bold was my biggest concern. I wouldn't want to see Damon as our starting center fielder next season. Ugh
I think the original quote meant that after next season Tabata or Jackson will take over the everyday patrol of center.
