Brawl @ Yanks/Rays gm today

Post#1 » by swisscheeseD » Wed Mar 12, 2008 6:50 pm

as per Sweeni Murti on 660FAN....

there was a bench clearing brawl at todays Rays/Yanks game...all started when shelley duncan was trying to leg out a double

he was thrown out by 5 feet, but slid with his spikes up into Iwamura...Rays RF Jonny Gomes came charging in from right field and shoved Shelley Duncan

both benches cleared...

im sure a youtube vid will leak

I love Girardi's quote

Reporter- "Iwamura has spike marks in his thigh."

Girardi- "Well my guys in surgery so c'mon."

I think both sides might let it blow over and try to focus on actually playing the game - instead of risking injury or suspension. Of course if someone looks at somebody the wrong way you could be right.

I love that pic of Shelley shrugging at all the rays. I love the fact that these guys play with the attitude they do. And Girardi is the perfect manager to go with these young kids. The Girardi quote was classic as well.

IDK that Maddon will take the next swing.

Not his style.

Did Gomes sissy trip over 2nd trying to get to Duncan? Where's the witty remark from Maddon today that he had after the Cervelli incident? Honestly, you never want to go out and hurt someone but Maddon should have just shut his trap after the last game and let Girardi blow off steam. To which, anyway you can hit a manager with a pitch or barrel into him at home plate?

I could see them letting it blow over because they SHOULD. The only reason I can see it coming back is because both managers are very upset with each other and neither one reacted as if to say that its all over with. Aside from that, the Rays are a young team, which can lead to anything.

More importantly, we face them 19 times. Lets face it...over the course of 19 games, there are bound to be hit batters and guys ran over and sliding into each other. Even if these things happen by accident or without malicious intent, they will be immediately taken the wrong way.

I'm not too sure about that. There are countless quotes of people talking about how "old school" Joe Torre is about how he would like nothing more than to settle it on the field like in the old days. Problem was we didn't have the guys to do it. Guys like Jeter, Arod, Moose, Wang, Matsui, Abreu etc. aren't those types of players. They will rationalize things and get on with it, in the past season we added some guys who are either rash or believe in an eye for an eye. Perhaps one could argue that we had Farnsworth and Bruney before but it's a long run in from the bullpen and they are pitchers. Not too far a run for Shelley though and he fits that mentality.

I would say that it's nice to see something like this but we shouldn't get used to it. The Yankees have a lot more to lose than anyone else. Who cares if Gomes gets suspended, the Devil Rays aren't going anywhere. Conversely, benches empty and you have someone like Cano getting suspended and it's an issue especially in a tight pennant race. I think the Yanks need to be tough in that they need to run over a few more catches, slide a little bit harder, pitchers need to brush guys off and knock guys down once in a while. No need for fights though, that won't help us. Maybe knock down a few water coolers. -Jitpal

Quite apart from the brawl, it was good to see the kid from Princeton pitch a scoreless inning. He may be the sleeper among the Yankees' young pitchers and the successor to Chamberlain as the set up guy if they move Joba to the rotation.

No, Torre was St. Joe (after the dynasty years). I don't care about the "quotes" Torre never retaliated. Heaven forbid you pitch in on a guy like ManRam or Ortiz who bat .400 & crowd the plate. How about when he threw Arod under the bus after the Ha! thing. Not only did he blast it in the media, he did NOTHING when Toronto tried to retaliate by throwing at Arod's kneecaps.

Girardi's style is more fitting for the Yankees than Torre's IMO
