The Yankees also put starter Phil Hughes on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday night with a strained right oblique muscle.

Hughes lasted just 3 2/3 innings in a 6-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. He allowed six runs and eight hits to drop to 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA after six starts.

This seems like a made up injury to me. Maybe an excuse to give him some time off.

Its not really babying him, its a way for him to work on the side and try to straighten things out without taking up a roster spot. Some can argue that we would be better off sending him down altogether, but the idea is to work with Eiland, which he wouldn't be able to do in Scranton. Keep him here, let him work with Eiland for a couple of weeks and hopefully he straightens himself out.

Oh he is. He has a stress fracture on his ninth rib. He is going to be shut down for 4 weeks before he starts throwing again. Looks like he will be on a pitch count next year too. Based on that injury history on Peter Abraham's blog it looks like he gets hurt a lot but other than 2005 with the shoulder inflammation all of his injuries were non-arm related. I think I remember reading that was because of his slider, which he doesn't throw as much anymore. -Jitpal

Girardi said that it happened before the game in Cleveland but Hughes never told anyone. -Jitpal

Well that was unexpected...don't really know what to say. Obviously its terrible news for him and all it does is push his development back once again.

It's funny if Hughes told everyone he was hurt. Then everyone would be screaming he is Carl Pavano Jr. He didn't so now he is an idiot. He just can't win with some fans. -Jitpal

but now we know that his problems were pretty much injury related. this is in a way good news.. He will come back later in the year and should be rested for a strong september push... Plus he is just 21.. young man has many, many years ahead to be great..

I think it is good because this justifies to Hughes that it wasn't him, it was the injury. However, depending on how long he is out, he may or may not pitch more innings than last year. Which means he would be on a pitch count again next year. Which would mean we are in the same boat next year as this year. -Jitpal

I agree, that there is some positives here that we know he should pitch a lot better than this when healthy.
