Matsui possibly done for the year, Cash looking at Baroid?

NEW YORK — Hideki Matsui's left knee swelled, increasing the possibility he will need season-ending surgery and perhaps giving the New York Yankees reason to contemplate signing Barry Bonds.

General manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that Matsui was running out of options to rehabilitate his knee, which has sidelined him since June 22 and kept him from playing the outfield since June 15.

Cashman rarely rules out any options, so he wouldn't exclude adding Bonds, who has offered to play at the minimum salary but has been shunned by all 30 major league teams this year. Cashman's answer to a question on the field before the All-Star game, however, was intriguing.

"I would say any rampant speculation on us involving a player of that magnitude would be extremely premature," Cashman said. "I would caution everybody to not misunderstand that since I'm not saying no to it, that that means, `Oh my gosh, that that might be happening down the line.' It's not something we're focused on at this point. We're focused on getting Hideki Matsui back rather than, you know, what we're going to do if he's not back."

Richie Sexson, released by Seattle last week, could be another option for the Yankees, short-handed because of injuries to Matsui and Johnny Damon.

"I'm not going to tell you if we're pursuing him or not," Cashman said. "I'm sure he's evaluating whatever his choices are."

:o How will you react if Barry comes aboard? :o

Damnit, I just heard the news about Matsui. That is going to hurt. :banghead: :banghead:

I'd be very interested in signing Barry if Matsui and Damon will not be back this year.

Barry in the field would be an absolute disaster. Barry at DH means Posada behind the plate 24/7.

I'm just saying....

So Posada can't catch anymore?

Well he did miss a lot of time with a shoulder problem that will probably require surgery after the season so having to be behind the plate 24/7 & attempting to throw out runners is problematic.

Swallowing defensive problems would be worth it to get Bonds. It's unbelievable that no one has gone after him up to this point.

Your Avi is priceless.. lol

As for Bonds, i'm all for it. Anything to help this anemic offense. Yeah the guys a pain in the ass but it's not like we're going to give him a long term deal, it'd only be for a couple of months.

Peter Abraham is saying that what he read into that statement by Cash was that we are NOT signing Barry, and I tend to agree. I don't want him here anyway - our offense may be trash right now but the media circus of Bonds in NY would be a nightmare.

I don't want Bonds. I would hate him here and would rather find another bat to play LF, CF or DH preferably a right handed bat. Matt Holliday would be my ideal choice even though we gotta give up a lot to get him.

Holliday is not worth it. His spilts:

Home: .357/.438/.586
Away: .301/.400/.459
(avg/obp/slg)

Holliday will still be a good hitter wherever he goes, just not as good as the king's ransom Scott Boras will be demanding for an extension. And that's on top of whatever we'd have to give the Rockies.

Plain and simple, the Yankees aren't favorites to make the playoffs this year, and chances are the only way it happens is if the offense catches fire in the last few months like last year. Bonds would help the chances of that happening without doing damage on the team's future like a Holliday deal would. The offense is getting old and will need to be retooled eventually, but midseason desperation isn't a setting to be doing that in. Bonds is far and away the best choice for a bat in the lineup, no matter what Joe Hackbag from the Palookaville Times tells you.

Excuse me but don't speak ill of Joe Hackbag. I live and die by his column in the P-ville Times on corn futures.
