Yankees new catcher Pudge Rodriguez

Post#1 » by tjm384 » Wed Jul 30, 2008 8:33 pm

The Yankees seem to have found a replacement for Jorge Posada.

The Yankees have acquired catcher Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers. Details of the rest of deal are not yet known.

GREAT DEAL. As much as I love Molina and his defense, he was part of our offensive trouble.

Just an awesome trade on so many levels. Molina's career high in games played is 78, he has already played in 69 this year. His time as an everyday catcher had to come to an end as he probably doesn't have the stamina for it at this point in his career. Posada just had surgery today, so you would think that the Yanks didn't have much leverage, yet they still rip off the Tigers. I guess Detroit had their hands tied as well with Zumaya landing back on the DL.

Our catcher's line just jumped from .229/.279/.307 to .295/.338/.417, huge jump in offensive production from the spot, and the drop in defense isn't going to kill us because Pudge has a great arm.

Pudge is also a proven winner, whether it was being the leader on the Marlins or the Tigers. He is emotional and just loves the big stage, although his postseason numbers don't blow you away. He brings so much credibility to a bottom third of a lineup that looked like a NL lineup, plus the boost that it gives to the mentality of the team.

As for the bullpen, no worries. It was a perfect sell high situation, I still can't believe Cashman pulled this off. Farnsworth finally had 1 good month in two and a half years, and then Cashman turns him into a winning hall of fame catcher, just unbelievable. There will be no drop off with our depth in the pen, the 8th will be handled by either Marte, Veras, or Edwar, and combining them with Robertson and even Geise makes for a great pen. Melancon was promoted to AAA the other day, so he may be looking at a few appearances there before the jump to the majors (the Yanks have done that a lot in the past year or two with relievers, including Edwar).

And I also forgot, lets remember that Pudge is in the final year of his deal and is a .300 hitting catcher with plus defense. That means type A free agent, which means a 1st rd pick and supplemental pick in return when he leaves this winter. Wow.

Or like nykgeneralmanager said, to fix our offense (as much as we all like Molina).

Brilliant move. Melky goes from hitting sixth to hitting ninth. Balances the lineup even more and we get even more veteran playoff experience. What I love about all of these moves Cashman is making is that they are improving us today and improving our future for next year. We should be getting 3-4 first round picks and 4-5 supplemental picks in next years draft. That is just ridiculous. Not to mention a long term RF solution and a lefy/setup guy for a little while. Cashman deserved an extension before these moves but even more now. Let's just bring in that 4th/5th starter for this squad and let's get down to business. -Jitpal

hahahahaha.

Rather than give this a thread i'll just put it here. The Astros got Hawkins off waivers, which means they traded minor league infielder Matt Cusick and cash to get him.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/spo ... 16286.html

I doubt Cusick is more than a warm body, but I still find it funny someone would give up something for Hawkins.

Edit: Heh... I just looked into it, and Cusick's numbers aren't all that bad. He was putting up .285/.356/.462 in the South Atlantic League (A) this year. If he amounts to anything at all Selig should force Ed Wade to walk around wearing a dunce cap for a year.
