The Yankees' new rotation is starting to take shape as they are also in serious negotiations with free-agent Derek Lowe. An agreement with Lowe appears likely to be finalized in coming days, as well. The sides were discussing a contract for four years and about $66 million late Tuesday.

But....

There is hope.

One source said reports that the Yankees are close to signing Lowe to a four-year deal are "incorrect." The Red Sox are also focused heavily on Lowe, and they're not going to just sit around the slot parlors all day and let their big pitching target waltz into New York. So add one more chapter to the never-ending Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.

Let's hope this is only a smokescreen.... Lowe would be terrible in the AL EAST. And there is very little upside with him... unlike Burnett and Sheets.

Agreed. I keep hearing that Lowe is a better option because he isn't demanding 5 years like Burnett. I'd much rather have 5 years of better production with some risk from Burnett than 4 years of no risk but not a ton of production out of Lowe. Sure, he is reliable, has history in the AL East, and is a good playoff performer. That is also exactly Andy Pettitte's resume, which is why you stop playing games with Pettitte and just give him his 1 year of $16 mil instead of trying to give him a paycut to $12 mil, especially when we are showing that we are willing to throw $16 mil a year at Lowe for far more than 1 season.

I say throw Andy 15m for 1 year, with a mutal option for a second year at 10m.

Then Toss Sheets a Three year 42m contract offer. and be done with it.

Truth be told, rather than add two more starters after Sabathia, i'd rather add one, leave the fifth spot open, and go after Adam Dunn. It looks like he could be had for a reasonable price tag and i'd feel a lot better if the team had a definite contributor to put next to ARod. Heck, then they could dangle Nady or Damon in front of another team to fill out the rotation while their values are artificially high. No harm in trying to dupe Sabean into giving up Jonathan Sanchez or something.
