International FA & da Bombers... Which do you desire?

Post#1 » by Lconte17 » Sat Jun 13, 2009 3:40 pm

July 1st coming quickly means International Free Agents can sign. So which FA do you desire. The two that stick out to me is Miguel Angel Sano and Gary Sanchez.

The yankees seem extremely high on Sanchez, who is a catcher. But with drafting, a catcher in the second round with the stock we have in the minors. I would much rather go hard after Sano. He has been compared to HRam, with Pujlos like hitting abilities. I would be ecstatic to sign Sano, who more then likely would be pegged as the successor to DJeter

There has been word the last couple of weeks that Sanchez will be a Yankee for a deal in the range of $3-3.5 million, but the last couple of days or so the Yankees are apparently in on Sano. I don't know if that means Sano instead of Sanchez or if it means both, but its nice to see the Yankees trying to make a big splash after taking it easy in a relatively weak draft (although they did a great job of adding a ton of signability kids). Sano is likely to set a signing bonus record, topping Michael Inoa's record set last year.

That would be awesome if we could get both of these guys.

I think the chances of signing both are pretty high. I hope they value Sano as high as possible. A couple other guys are Batista, Fuentes, and Arguelles.

Here's a link to an interesting little clip about Sano...a 6'3" 189lb SS prospect who is supposed to be 15 years old. Is or he isn't, who knows, but supposedly one of the most talented players in all of Latin America.

And a link to a ESPN article about Sano which really goes into more about the world of Dominican baseball, agents, handlers and the controversy around it...

The Pirates are supposedly ready to give Sano a payday (that may be why they reached for Tony Sanchez in the draft instead of drafting and paying a better prospect). Unless the Yankees are really ready to dish out dollars on these signees I doubt they get both.

When it came out last week that the Yankees are bringing in Sano this Thursday for a workout, there were also reports that the Pirates will not go to $4 million for Sano and may not even go to $3 million. Who knows if its true, but maybe thats why the Yankees are jumping into the picture right now (we would be willing to go in the $3-3.5 million range).
